Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Browse Events - New Browse Events - Several new browse events are now supported for both stand alone and embedded browse layouts. OnSave - fires when a record in the Browse layout is saved. CanSave - fires when the user tries to save a record. The event can be cancelled by calling the cancel() function. <Column>_onChange - fires when data in a browse column is changed. The <Column> events are defined by inserting the appropriate functions calls into the Browse, Events script. For example, here is how to define an event handler for the 'lastname' column in a browse:
    For a stand alone Browse, select Browse, Events, Events. For an embedded Browse, select Object, Event, Event, or right click on the Browse and select Events, Events
    In the 'Events' script, define this function:
    function lastname_OnChange as v ()
    ui_msg_box("On Change Event for Browse. Browse name is: ",this.name())
    end function
    Note that the 'this' alias refers to the browse object that contains the browse column.

      Al,
      I have used the embedded browse OnChange event quite often, but the OnSave and CanSave I remember trying when it was first introduced and could not get them to work....if they do work, either I coded incorrectly then or it has been fixed in later versions(??).

      Have you used the latter two sucessfully?

        Mike

        You're asking a lot this close to kick off......

        The onsave and cansave(right click gets you to the events) are in a different grouping(events - events - a function for each field object) than the onchange... and I don't remember any problem with those save events...

        What issues are you having?

          equivocation, equivocation, equivocation. What I meant to ask was this:

          if you open a form where an embedded browse is the first object in the tab order, and the first column is the first object in the browse tab order - am trying to trap when the user changes to a different column, so I can clear a query based on the previous column.

          got an idea - will post results if it works

              Use of the

              Code:
              if Browse1.active()="Your column's object name"
                'do something....
              end if
              may be of use--I have used it to limit data deletion to only certain columns as example.

              Al, I see the events for a browse's OnSave and CanSave--I just remember trying both and not a thing happened--as if there was no code whatsoever IOW--had a messagebox to test if it fired and did not....but have not tried it since (back in v8), but will now that you state you have had them working.

                Re: browse - change column

                I was able to work a solution for my particular need, but it does not lend itself to general use - i.e., if the user has changed columns, from the column change event itself

                here is code in the onkey even for a form that dynamically searches on any column

                what I wanted was, that if you were searching in column1, and had typed "abc" and then changed to column2, and typed "g," to kill the current query for the form, but then start a new query based on the character you had typed for the column you were active in

                Code:
                if this.active()="browse1"
                 if a_user.key.value="{enter}" .and. a_user.key.event="down"
                  a_user.key.handled=.t.
                  ans="yes"
                  rnum=tbl.recno()
                  parentform.index_set("")
                  this.close()
                  end
                 end if
                 tbl=table.current()
                 if a_user.key.event="down"
                  if left(a_user.key.value,1)="{" then
                   ' it's a special key or backspace or function key

                      Hey, this post might help. It includes a "mini-app" (v.11 desktop) I built (and updated not long ago) that shows exactly when each browse & table event fires...... (I'd bet it will work in v.10.) ~ It shows in "real time" the events firing as you edit, change add and move around in the browse....

                      http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...l=1#post631600

                      Actually, it shows not only browse events, but table events and also field level events. (all of them I think)
                      ~As each event "occurs", the most recent event is displayed at the TOP of the list, & the list scrolls down.

                        You could use the canwrite and onwrite field rule events, but they are fired later in the sequencing.
