Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha5 language & functions

I have seen alot of phrases on peoples replies that I don't understand yet. For example - file.copy_folder(), Event, Ui_get_path, Parentfor.close(), ect. What are these? Are they functions or xbasic language? Is there any SIMPLE reading material out there that explains what they are and when & where they should be used. I don't mind searching, just guide me where.

My previous file.copy_folder() is a link to the appropriate section of the wiki explaining its use. You will find much else there.
    There can be only one.

They are xbasic functions. There are hundreds (thousands?) of them.

This is the official help site:
      http://alphafivewiki.com/tiki-index.php

This one is easier to use, but no longer supported:

          Re: Alpha5 language & functions

Paul, I have a different take on this than Peter.

Xbasic functions: these are free standing functions that are not bound to any objects in the system. Examples: str(), alltrim(), upper(), etc.

Object Methods: these are functions that are bound to particular objects in the system. Examples: in "parentform.close()" the ".close()" method is part of the "form" object. The close() method is a function that operates within the context (or on) the object for which it has been defined. It cannot be used outside that context. Every "form" object has a collection of methods predefined for it. "close()" is one that has been defined for form objects.

The term "parentform" is a relative object address which is a pointer to the form object within which the current object is found. i.e. in a button onPush event script "parentform" refers to the form that contains the button object.

File.copy_folder() is a bit of a hybrid. "copy_folder()" is a method of the system object named "File".

Table.open() is another. "open()" is a method of the system object named "Table".

The help system terminology is pretty consistent. If you see the docs talking about a "method" then it's a function that's bound to an object. Purists might even say that the method is part of the object. Notice that methods are always "connected" to their objects with a dot, and always include a pair of parentheses at their end.

On the other hand if you see the docs referencing a "function" then it's generally free standing and part of the xbasic scripting language. These are "free standing" and are not connected to other structures with a dot.

I wouldn't say that I have a different take. Rather, Tom has clearly expounded some nuances between object methods and functions. I confess I never think of xbasic in that way. I just learned it and used it; don't really think about it too much. But Tom is a great expert on xbasic and Alpha Five. You probably won't go wrong with Tom's advice in most any case.
