Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Can I consume my .Net objs now or in A5 11?

    I am thinking to write my .Net objects in Visual Studio and consume them in A5. Is it possible now (A5 10.5) or I have to wait for .Net 4 integration and do everything in A5 11?
    Thanks

    While I dont know the answer I am interested in the answer to your question. While I may not take adivantage of the Subscription plan being offered by A5 I will upgrade to V11 when released. I will become very - very excited about V11 if we can consume the .Net framework objects.

      In fact I am a little in stand by: I have to start a project big enough to require a lot of code. I belive that A5 is uncomparable with other solution as to regard developing the user interface but I am afraid that the ide will make me loose the saved time.
      I am a biginner so may be I have missed some important aspect of coding in A5 but if I have seen right is too poor for me.
      I hope that someone of A5 leaders will reply to these posts.
      - Coding in A5 is fun? Ok tell me how and I will start my project
      - Can I consume .Net Objects now? Ok I will start my project
      - Will A5 11 be ready soon? Ok I will wait
      None of them? Ms .net becomes more attractive

        There are two references to "dotnet", not yet available, in the wiki. Looks like something is coming.

        DotNet Example: Image metadata function
        DotNetPath Function
        There can be only one.

          Here's a little taste of what's coming in V11 along these lines:
          .....
          5. We are integrating the .NET Framework into the product

            Welcome to the "Hurry up and Wait" club. Every time there is a new version on the horizon, some have begged Alpha to provide a release date. A couple of times, that/s be done but each time the date was missed. That's the nature of the beast in software development.

            If you already have MS.net, I suggest you start your project even if v11 is released within the next month or two and even if you cannot integrate your project into V11. I say this because as your project develops, you begin to learn what needs to be changed and tweaked. Then, when V11 is released, you save time by not going through the same development route. I wouldn't worry about any of the fancy stuff but getting the basic layout of your project down will save time in the long run. This way, your project moves forward on a positive note.

            Another thought is fro you to send an email to [email protected] and ask if MS.net can be integrated into V11.

            Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

              I am excited about the idea of being able to consume .Net objects and the fact that may be possbile because A5 will using the framework itself. While this question does not apply to me I wonder what will happen to the apps built on versions earlier than 11. Will they be supported in the upcoming release? My reason for asking is the personal experience of having gone from VB6 to VB.net. All of my VB6 apps needed conversion and a lot of recoding to work. In fact I still have a one current and very large VB6 app I am moving to the current .Net platform. So will A5 users be confronted with a similar experience or will A5 do a better job of dealing with that process than MS did?

                I already posted a reply but I don't see it so I reply again. I agreed with you. I arrived to this conclusion considering that in theory compiling .net objects as COM objects is already possible. I have tried but with no success. The Idea is develop two fronts, when A5 11 will be ready I will decide. If V11 IDE is good enough, I will continue with it, if not, i will continue .net (COM as reserve plan). If the work done is poor I will consider the UI done in A5 as prototyping for a whole .net app.

                  Re: Can I consume my .Net objs now or in A5 11?

                  jkwrpc, I beleave the user will have the option to use .net, not the obligation. Why old application wrote in xbasic should stop working? They are in Xbasic and Xbasic will remain.
                  Now you can write in Xbasic
                  dim A as Sql::Connection
                  with v11 you will be able to write in Xbasic
                  dim A as NamespaceofDotNet.ClassOfDotNet
                  I figure that scenario but I am a newbie, the probabilities I am wrong are a lot.

                    I believe it will be:

                    Code:
                    dim sv as DotNet::Services
                    dim assembly as DotNet::AssemblyReference
                    just sayin'....

                      Thanks Sauro and Steve.

                      The only issue I was trying to raise was the one of conversion. There are in my mind a whole of reasons that make the .Net framework attractive. For example, the third party component pool alone is huge. Using my Microsoft experence as the basis, writing a new app in VB6 or VB.Net is possble, even to this day. However, converting an existing VB6 to VB.Net can be a huge undertaking if the application is very large. It can be done, but requires a lot of redesign, changes in objects used, etc. I suspect I am not alone, but I always felt that MS did not do the best job it could in providing a conversion utility. Now applying that to A5, if a person has a huge investment in an existing XBasic app and wants to move it to the .Net framework will they encounter a similar experience? I am saying, I hope anyone undertaking this kind of change will have better utilities than I have seen in the MS world. I certainly dont have an answer, but will be curious about the answer.
                      Regards,

                        Why not just move to ASP.NET and C#?
