Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Oracle Connection Problem

I am using AlphaFive v10.5 and trying to connect to an external Oracle DB. No problems connecting using ODBC to SqlServer db.
I get an error that says "Unable to Connect. Database specific API error". I am using the AlphaDAO Connection String wizard to do this. Very frustrating because sqlserver was so easy and straightforward. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

      Re: Oracle Connection Problem

I did try the connection type ORACLE.

We now think the problem is a 64 bit/32 bit incompatibility.

Does anyone know if Alpha has any problems with 64 bit platforms?

      Thanks.

I have attached a second error message. I can use my oracle sql developer and connect to this database with no problems so I know the connection is open. I do not have any trouble connecting to sqlserver, postgresql, or mysql on the same server.

      Just Oracle.

Not sure about the 64bit issue...

What version of the DB are you using?

Did this ever get resolved? I had no problem when I did some testing last year on a 32bit platform. I just tried it using Alpha 10.5 on Win7 x64 and it says DB not open. I have no trouble doing a TNS ping and it is available from an ASP.NET app running in the same laptop as Alpha.

              Re: Oracle Connection Problem

Ditto on no problems with 32 bit test last year. Now I am going back into that same application/database, having copied it all to a Win7-64 system and I am getting the same error message shown in the 1/13/2011 posting in this thread. I have no problem getting the test to work from the DSN/ODBC definition. It works fine from an ASP.NET app running on the same system. SQLplus can access it from cmd window. It seems to only be Alpha.

I have spent hours trying different connect strings, but I have not found a way to figure a way to enter the connect string that I use from ASP that bypasses the TNS listener. I don't know if that would make any difference anyway.

                Re: Oracle Connection Problem

I finally got this resolved on my 64 bit Win7. I moved a5v10 from ..\Program Files (x86)\.. to ..\Program Files\.. After doing this I went through with regedit and modified all entries to reflect the different parent folder name. This might have been the hacker solution and might well have been accomplished by removing and reinstallling the the other parent folder. The reason for the move is that there is a bug in the Oracle ODBC parsing file names that contain a parenthesis character. They don't seem to have any intent to fix it.

Also make sure you use the correct version of odbcad32.exe to create the DSN. You want the one from the WOW64 folder.

After doing the above and creating a DSN, the final connenct string that I am using is:
                {A5API='ODBC',DataSource='DsnOracleXE',A5Syntax='Oracle',UserName='rat',Password=''}

                  Re: Oracle Connection Problem

                  Hi All,

I had the same problem with version 11 Beta. After loads of head scratching and on a wim because it worked on my 32 bIt Windows laptop, and the only thing that changed was a new laptop with 64 Bit Windows 7, I installed the software in the 64bit "Program Files" folder not the default "Program Files (x86)".

I wasn't really sure what windows 7 would do, but I left the other installation in the x86 folder just in case.

Windows 7 came up with the alert "Reinstall with recommended settings" and "Program Installed Correctly" -I answered with the latter, ran the program and it connected to Oracle without a Hitch when creating a "New Active Link table".

I then removed both copies of AlphaV11 and reinstalled again in the 64 Bit folder and the warning about not reinstalling properly did not show up so that's even better news

                  Hope This helps
