Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Simple (I hope) default value question

Hope you all will bear with me because I have not designed a database since the days of Dbase about a million years ago so I am in totally unfamiliar territory but determined to make this work.

I am sure I am missing something very simple.

I have one table with client information
    id_number
    first_name
    last_name
    spouse_first_name
    spouse_last_name

what I would like to have happen is if the spouse_first_name is not blank then the spouse_last_name would defaut to the last_name. I do need to be able to over-write the last name because it is not always the same.

Muddling along I seem to be able to have the spouse_last_name default to the last_name from the previous record...but not from the record where data is currently being input.

    What am I missing?

    Thanks!

right click on the spouse first name field and select 'events', select 'on depart', then using 'Action script' add an event that will set the field valuse of the surname field to the value you want.

This will only happen when you leave the so you can edit the surname with no issues

In the action script I would also add a condition to the action that made it only work if the surname field is blank. This way it will not overwrite when you sometimes tab through the fields to get where you want to go

Thanks Mark...I was trying to use default values and getting nowhere fast. Appreciate being pointed in a better direction!

Re: Simple (I hope) default value question

I am not sure what Mark gave you is going to be satisfactory (if it is, feel free to ignore my suggestion). I think it might be better to do something on the OnArrive event for Spouse_Last_Name. In xbasic code, something like the following (you can probably do the equivalent with Action Scripting):
        Code:
        If this.value="" .and. parentform:spouse_first_name.value<>""
            parentform:spouse_last_name.value=parentform:last_name.value
        end if
At least I presume that if something is already in the field, you don't want to overwrite or add to it. But then again maybe Mark has that covered.

Yes that can be done in action script as well.

Only need to set the script to work on an 'if condition' which be something like:

          my option:

          isblank("surnamefield")

          raymonds option

          isblank("surnamefield").and.isblank("spousefirstnamefield")

You are right. I definately do not want to overwrite information that may have already been entered (and you made me think about what could happen when I need to go back and edit a record...customer adds or deletes a spouse).

I do want to be able to edit the field and not be locked into the same last name.

Guess I am going to have to try and see what works best. Thanks for giving me another way of looking at this. I can see I have a lot to learn!
