Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha Deployment Questions...

    Hi,

I just created my first install package in Apha - apart from the fact that it created a massive setup file of 125 megs it also loads up with lots of file menus and options I did not request and have no wish to provide to an end user...
Is there a simpletons guide to creating this setup file? Is it possible to bypass the alpha splash screen? and why after running the setup and then the installed application does my development environment become altered by the preferences I change in the runtime version?

    Thanks,

    Paul

The wiki seems to be unavailable.

    Step 6: Shortcut

    Click Modify Shortcut.

On the General tab enter the name that will be attached to the shortcut in the Shortcut name field.

Select the location for the shortcut. The options are:

    "None"

    "Custom Group"

    "Desktop"

    "Start Menu"

    "Startup Folder"

If the target computer is running Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP, in the Owner field select whether the program will be available to the Current user or All users. [Picture]

On the Appearance tab select whether the main Alpha Five window will have a custom title. If so, enter the title in the Use custom title field.

When loading, select whether Alpha Five will use:

    its Default splash screen

    No splash screen
    a Custom bitmap

If you selected "Custom bitmap", click in the Custom bitmap field to select an image to display when Alpha Five is loading.

When loading, select whether Alpha Five will use:

    its Default icon

    Custom icon

If you selected "Custom icon", click in the Custom icon field to select an icon to display when Alpha Five is loading. [Picture]

On the Window tab select the size of the main Alpha Five window. The options are:

Default - previous size of main Alpha Five window

Maximized - maximize the main Alpha Five window

Minimized - minimize the main Alpha Five window

Select whether to disable the ability to minimize or maximize the main Alpha Five program window.

Select whether to open Alpha Five without a system menu.
    There can be only one.

      Hi Stan,

I am not sure what you are referring to in your attachment.
I specified a BMP file which came up at the time of running the setup - I do not recall being shown an option to not use the default splash screen, I specified an alternative icon but the desktop icon created had the alpha icon associated with it.
The installation destination I specified for some reason has been assigned to my development environment as well - I have no idea why...

Sorry to be so stupid but could you spell it out for me or point me to document that will.

      Thanks,

      Paul

From the AlphaSoftware main page the Support link/menu allows you to access the documentation wiki (when it is working).

Tried to view it but it says I don't have the rights - logged out and in again - still the same result...

          Thanks anyway...

I think it is down for maintenance. I can't log in either. See Martin's post in Announcements.

                  Hi,

Does someone have a demo application that uses the runtime that I can download and see what a deployed application can look like without the development environment?

                  Thanks,

                    Paul,

When you deploy an application onto a "runtime" machine, the only difference between it and a full package machine is that the user does not have access to change forms, reports, code, etc. The application should look and feel exactly the same.

                      Hi Tom,

I have a vague idea of what you mean but I will continue to struggle with the alpha runtime model until I see a finished article or something meaningful that I can produce without unintentionally affecting my current development database...

When I previously created an installation system it affected my development environment after installing it on the same machine even though I specified a different repository.
So - is there a simple way to take my development database and call it something else at a separate location so that I can play with it to my hearts content until I fully understand what I perceive to be all the limitations associated with the runtime facility?
I cannot see any obvious option, tool or utility to help me achieve this - Do I have to really copy all the files and rename some files? or is there a more developer friendly way to achieve this?

Sorry to be a pain, but with EDeveloper and uniPaas I have been used to straightforward desktop and network deployment facilities and from all that I have seen so far alpha does not seem to be interested in making life easy in this important part of the development cycle.

Thanks and sorry again for sounding so disappointed in alpha...

                          Thank you Michael,

I just had a teamviewer one on one session with Glenn Schild and he very kindly showed me all that I needed to understand about deployment. Thank goodness it can do all that I need - I was starting to panic.

Thanks again and I will have a look at your application as well.
