Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Duplicate child records with duplicate parent

When we track CEU hours for our employees, we enter all the class data in a parent and all the students who attended in the child. Sometimes we will have more than one class topic in a single day, so the same parent data, or most of it anyway, gets re-entered and all the students get re-entered. Very redundant.

I would like to duplicate the class data with the duplicate button, clear the fields that need the new data, such as class name and hours, and also, duplicate each student under the new class topic.

I am guessing an append of the current students with the foreign key of the new class. But before going through all that, i wanted to make sure that is the best way to go. I am amazed at the built in functions and abilities in Alpha, that used to take me hours, or more to create in .NET/Access.

Re: Duplicate child records with duplicate parent

I use a scripted approach based on the code Dr. Wayne discusses in his book "Xbasic for Everyone", see chapter 36 "Duplicating Records". He develops an example based on a single record, and then extends it to duplicate records from a set. Will monitor this thread to see if others have simpler solutions to offer. -- tom

Re: Duplicate child records with duplicate parent

I think the book is a wonderful resource and recommend it to you. I did a bit of digging for you (in the code archive forum of this message board) and found a link to an article on this at Dr. Wayne's website.

I think the approach outlined there is the same as discussed in his book. His website is www.learn alpha.com You might want to visit that site and search for an article called "Duplicating a set". Let us know if you have questions about the code you will find there. While there you might peruse the other useful articles he's cataloged.

Thank you very much Tom. If you have other links, or publications, that will help get me up to speed on Alpha 5, please post them or forward to me. Have a nice weekend.
