Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5 V10 Runtime

I have a small Desktop app working OK in XP.
I installed this on my laptop also using XP and it works fine.

I installed the same app on anothe windows 7 OS machine and am having problems.
When I tried originally to run the app I received errors similar to those found at http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...ad.php?t=87436
'Error running addin 'Startup_100_Register_Controls' Could not open OLE Object

As suggested I installed a trial of A5 but if I now try to open runtime open the splash screen opens for a very short time and then disappears.
Can anyone say how I can get Runtime working on windows sever please.
    Many thanks
    John

    Re: A5 V10 Runtime

I managed to get the desktop app working by using the evaluation version on the windows 7 machine.
I think this means I will need to reinstall the full version of Alpha on my developer machine and copy the runtime from there onto my windows 7 machine.
Does that sound about right please?
    Thanks
    Joh

Have you tried running the RegisterFilesVistaWin7.bat supplied by Alpha which is in the install directory of the runtime

        Thanks Mark
I will look into this and let you know how I get on. The machine is not here at the moment but the idea sounds good.

Could be a similar prob to the one I had when I loaded the RTime into a SSD on the win 7 machine.
If you put the R/Time and the app in the SSD, you might have trouble. If they are on the data drive it should all work.

I've got V9 RunTime and V10.5 Dev but no R/time. If you want to drop the app on the forum one of us will check it out I'm sure.

I tried running RegisterFilesVistaWin7.bat from the directory C:\Program Files\a5V10 Runtime with a double click but I'm not sure it did anything. Should I be doing something different?
              Thanks

                Re: A5 V10 Runtime

All that file does is run the following lines

                regsvr32 Codejock.PropertyGrid.v11.1.3.ocx
                regsvr32 Codejock.ReportControl.v11.1.3.ocx
                regsvr32 Codejock.SuiteCtrls.v11.1.3.ocx
                regsvr32 Codejock.TaskPanel.v11.1.3.ocx
                regsvr32 a5controls.dll
                regsvr32 a5contexteval.dll
                regsvr32 XBasicActiveScripting.dll

Try running one of these lines from the command prompt. You should get a succeeded message if all OK. If not it also may be you need to add the full path line to the file after regsvr32

                  Thanks
Maybe I am going about this the wrong way.

I copied C:\Program Files\a5V10 Runtime from my developer machine and pasted this to C:\Program Files\a5V10 Runtime in the windows 7 machine.
I then get the error as attached file.

                    John,

you need to INSTALL the runtime on the machine. You just can't copy the folders. Once installed, open it once, then close it. After that install the latest runtime patch, and you should be good to go. I have runtime installed in a windows7 machine (32 bit) and it runs fine.

                          John,
I've never used the install maker program. Because everything is in-house, we just go around and install the runtime and the shortcuts to the applications on all the machines. We then have routines set up that will install/update the shadow copies of the applications into specific folders on the user machines when they start up. I wasn't meaning to sound condescending when I said to install the runtime first. It is just the way that I have always done it.

Installing the runtime is a one-time shot, so it isn't that big a deal. In fact, we keep a disk image of the specific machines with all the "normally" required programs already set up. If we need to roll out a new machine or replace one that has gone bad, we just drop the image onto the disk, and we're ready to go.

Our problem is getting the updated shadows out. Using the automatic shadow update is not an option when you have this many users. Someone will always get the message about the process is being used by someone else, and the update would never get fully rolled out. We tell alpha to "do nothing" if the master and shadow version numbers as set in Alpha are different.

We created a folder on one of our servers that contains self extracting zips of all of the newly created shadow databases. In another folder on one of our servers is a text file called a5_version_reference.txt In this file is the name of each database that is shadowed, and the version number of the shadow creation (this is just the date with a "." reference if there was more than one on a given date).

On the desktop side, each shadow has a text file with the version reference date in it.
                              ex: socsvcs.txt
                              PHP Code:

We utilize a program called "Ground Control" at PC startup that has a very powerful scripting language. we use this to determine if the version in the text file on the local PC is earlier than the version in the a5_version_reference file. If not, we execute the associated zip file, and the shadow is updated. Beyond Alpha stuff, we use "Ground Control" to take care of a lot of the housekeeping chores that people never perform. It has been a real help.
