Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Stop Automatic Backup

    Hello-

I need for the feature within Alpha version 10 to stop automatically backing up changes to the database. I went through the feature in Control Panel of Tools->Backup and unchecked features that seemed to reference it, but I don't think it worked. Can someone tell me how to turn off this feature? Simply deleting the backup folders doesn't stop re-creating the folders the next day.

    Thank you-

    Re: Stop Automatic Backup

    The wiki says

    Controlling automatic backups

You can turn off the automatic backup feature using the a5.System_Mode_set() command.

    Example:

    'Check status of feature

    ? a5.System_Mode_Get("auto_backup")

    = "True"

    'Turn feature off

    a5.System_Mode_set("auto_backup","false")
Don't see any indicaton whether this is a one time process or whether it should be part of the autoexec script.
    There can be only one.

      Re: Stop Automatic Backup

      Hi Stan-

Thanks for replying back. I need to be sure that once I exit Alpha and later log back in, I won't see the backup folder anymore. Therefore, I am guessing I need to implement this within my autoexec script?

I have 3 applications using Alpha that the backup is processing and the file size is over 7+ GB.

        Re: Stop Automatic Backup

The documentation for a5.System_Mode_set() seems to indicate that it does modify the values in the View, Settings, dialog so the change should be permanent until reversed.

I don't see how it could hurt or otherwise slow things down to just add

        a5.System_Mode_set("auto_backup","false")

        to your autoexec.

          Re: Stop Automatic Backup

Thanks Stan- I just implemented this for one application and will see if it works. Just to go into a little more detail, the backup folder re-appears based on a script to append data to a table. I'll be in touch.

            Re: Stop Automatic Backup

I run it in autoexec for the db that I do not want it to backup. I find it has been working fine

FYI - The setting does not appear to be saved. I ran it in the Interactive Window, shut down A5, then restarted A5 and the setting was back to the original setting. In other words, it needs to be in the autoexec of every app for which you want it turned off. (just wanted to avoid ending my sentence with a preposition for those that are offending by that kind of thing:D)

                  ?a5.System_Mode_get("auto_backup")
                  = "True"

California is from where I had come.
Or is it "California is where from I had come"?
Either one seems pluperfect to me. Huh?
                        Enough!
