Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Custom Find fails in browse

Im having trouble with a custom find generated by action scripting. I wrote a custom find following the help file and it failed too giving a different error message.

Ive attached an example. The example has one table, a form and a browse with each having a custom toolbar. The coding on the toolbars is Alpha generated. In the form properties, the browse name is listed in the companion browse box on the form tab.

From the control panel, I open the form. Next I click on the browse icon in the toolbar. Next, click on the find icon in the toolbar. I get an error message, the object :Status_item does not exist. The browse does exists as that is the name in the browse title bar.

Next, close the browse and return to the control panel. Select the browse tab and open the browse Status_item. Click on the find icon and the find record find opens.

Close the browse, return to the control panel, forms tab. Open the form, press F8, click on the find icon. Again I get an error message.

I think this is a bug. Can someone verify this. Does anyone have a work around. Whats nice about the current code, when jumping to the browse, the same record being viewed in the form in active when the browse opens.

    Thank you,

    Ron

Re: Custom Find fails in browse

    Ron,

I took a look. I would say it is not a bug. It is a matter of context. Even though you are using a named browse which you have specified as the companion to the form the name of the object with in which you are working is still called "Main_Form". You can see this by observing the name in the tab of the window bar. When you change to the browse view the name stays the same. So the code behind the Find button is looking for 'Status_item' which in this case is not there but if you run the browse on its own then it is.

To fix this make the code generic.
    Code:
    topparent.FindBy_DefinedKey("Find Record","Search for:",2,"Item+Model+Sn",.t.,"$a5_find_by_key")
Now you have to be careful where you use this toolbar. Because the find by key specifies particular fields you have to ensure that the toolbar is used in the correct context. You can also add more error checking similar to what teh AS genie created but allowing for multiple layout names.

      Thanks Tim.

Fixed my problem. Learned something too.
Action scripting is great, but it locks you in to a specified group of parameters. The help files are wonderful, but they only reference form/browse by pointer or name.

I just did not think about using topparent.

      Thanks again,
