Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    John:
Hate to see that you didn't get any responses, perhaps it has to do with the way the question was phrased:
    Grid:
    Do you mean a browse?
Do you mean a grid in an xdlg?

Incidentally, glancing at the message board, I found your title: "Hi ! I am John ...Need help " entertaining..
    to which I say:
Hi! I am Gabriel.. and I am a recovered alphaholic.
But,..seriously, if you provide more specifics, I am sure you will get an answer.

Hi John, My name is Ken and unlike Gabriel, I'm still recovering. I tend to use a Query by Form (QBF) rather than Find by Form (FBF) simply because when multiple records are found which match the query, it's easier to work with them. At some point, when I am done using the query, I put code to show all records which turns off the query. Usually this is on other buttons which do other things not related to the query. That way, I don't have to remember to turn off the query and it works behind the scenes with the user not even knowing what is taking place.

Which ever method I use, FBF or QBF, it depends on what I'm needing to do with the record/s once it's found. However, most all the time, I use QBF. No doubt there are those to think just the opposie and that's what's nice about A5, there's usualy more than one way to et the job done.

          Ted,

As a new A5 user (coming from Visual Studio, ABAP, and MS Access) I've been struggling with knowing what to search for as well as finding anything useful in the WIKI and docs. I just wanted to say that I found it refreshing to see a straight answer to a question... no "did you try searching", not just a link to another thread, but a short and sweet example of how to do something!

Maybe there are more answers given in the same manner than I realize, I just haven't found too many :-). A hearty "Thank You" for this and any future help you provide to any and all struggling to get their minds wrapped around this product (or just looking for a nudge in the right direction)!

Hello Bob and Welcome to the message board!

The WIKI has been a frustrating tool for many. However, it has changed a lot for the better over the last year or so and it's much easier to use. When you click on the Help menu, there are options for how to use WIKI as well as access to the videos. Another method I use is google. For example, I wanted to find out if I could set up an SQL database with Alpha so I googled, How to import an access database with Alpha Five and found several suggestions to explore. You might want want to try it.

I also googled, naming convention with sql database. If you try it, you'll find your answer.

As afar as asking questions, try to be specific. General questions will get general answers.

Re: Hi ! I am John ...Need help for grid display

Bob, thanks for your kind words. I find it easier sometimes to post a solution example than to find the syntax and type it out.
The difficulty sometimes, is knowing just how far to go when attempting to help someone.

Usually, users who have a good technical awareness of another product - like Access - have trouble using the Action Scripting (AS) approach and need to be weaned off coding everything. That is what AS actually does, but I'm not sure everyone is aware that the processes produce CODE, and that code works.

New users who are getting to grips with developing computer systems for the first time generally welcome a working example so they can shortcut the learning process. A bit like the training plan to "sit by Nellie and just watch". This approach has its own drawbacks, as the example will be my example and with Alpha there are a multitude of possible solutions.

You will - from time to time - see a one word answer to a question, and a number of contributors have this down to a fine art, having taken in the probable knowledge base of the supplicant. They are not being rude/clever/awkward, it's just that the answer is in that one word. If you do not understand the pointer and reply "What?", you will usually get a lot more assistance.

Anyway, as I mentioned earlier, if it is easier to post an example rather than bashing the keyboard, I'll usually do that.
