Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Variable browse height with memo field

    Hi all,

I have a memo field which contains varying amounts of data. I need to make an embedded browse accept the varying heights of the data when displayed - but I am struggling to work out how this can be done. I see I can change the size of the fields manually, but I was hoping I could create a running list without huge gaps.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

Unfortunately I think this cannot be done. You can adjust the row height, but then every row is adjusted as well. You are looking for something like excel can do based on its contents. I have not found a way to do this in a browse and I have looked as well.

Re: Variable browse height with memo field

      Hi,

:(. I was hoping I was just missing something obvious. For the moment I have just used an inform report - but it is not the quickest to load and has to refresh.

Any suggestions on a better way for me to do this. I have a client table, linked to a note table on the customer key. I want to be able to display the notes continuously. As I say I have gone down a report route at the moment, but I wonder if I could return the results as part of a calculated field?

      Thanks

Re: Variable browse height with memo field

Rev, I've got around this in a couple of ways.
        1) Have a field on the Form where the Browse is with just the Memo data available. When the Row is selected, the Memo field is populated with all of the data. Clicking the Pencil when in the Memo Field in the Browse is a nuisance for some people.
        2) Have a button which optionally shows when there is any data in the Memo field of a record. Click to go to a Modal Form with the data in it. Mine slowly blinks to draw attention to it.

As Mark points out, all Rows are, of necessity, the same height.

          Hi ted,

          Thanks for the reply.

My instructions are that it must be a continuous list requiring nothing more than scrolling up/down.

I think I might just scrap the separate table for notes and use a field within my client table.

          Thanks

If you go to the code archive to this forum and download the checklist creator I put their as a demo. It takes data and puts it in excel and word depending on choice. Both manipulate the rows and columns. It may help you in your quest

Rev, have a look at the attached. It works off one Table and has a Conditional Object running with the Memo Field on the form.
Try looking at the Nigella line.
I have to say that I think the "instructions" are a bit flawed. Have you been given a formal Specification to work from?

                Hi Ted and Clunes,

                Thanks for your help.

I've managed to get around my issue using a single field - in-fact it seems to be a neater solution as it loads so much quicker and meets the specification.

I've kept a copy of the file from Ted to dissect for reference.

                Thanks again.
