Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to build a dynamic lookup in a dropdown?

    .
    Hi,
I'd be grateful for any tips on how to do a certain type of lookup. I'm illustrating it with a simplified version:

    - I have two tables, Events and Places
    - In the Events table there is an eventplace field that does a lookup to the Places table

IMAGE 1: In the Events table, when the user goes to the Place field, he can type whatever he wants and that gets recorded (for example, Moscow)
    01 dropdown initial.JPG

IMAGE 2: If instead of typing anything the user clicks on the dropdown arrow, a list of all cities in the Places table appears
    02 dropdown all cities.JPG

IMAGE 3: But if the user first types something (like "an") and then clicks the arrow, only those cities that contain "an" appear
    03 dropdown selected.JPG

    Thank you for your suggestions,
    Felix

You want a filtered lookup. The filter would be something like

    place.value $ place

You don't mention where you have created the dropdown. Table field rules or form object definition?
    There can be only one.

How to build a dynamic lookup in a dropdown?

      .
      Stan,
Thank you for your reply. I have created the dropdown in the table field rules. Just for completion, my fields are:

      EVENTS table
      - eventid
      - action
      - place

      PLACES table
      - placeid
      - location

      What I have done is:
      - Gone to the field rules of EVENTS table, place field
      - Filled it in as shown in the figure. What I guess is missing is the filter (highlighted in pink). I have tried several combinations but none will do.
If instead of creating the dropdown in the table field rules it is built in a form, the solution would also be useful for me.

      Best regards,
      Felix

        Felix,
If you post that database to the message board, we can have it to show you how it can be done.

I tried something that didn't work. This is definitely not my area of much knowledge.

          Thanks for jumping in Mike.

Re: How to build a dynamic lookup in a dropdown?

Sounds like a plain Vanilla lookup using lookup table in the Field Rules, but.. what is a little confusing:
1-You are asking for a filter. It sounds from your original post that you do not need any filter since you are not looking places based on the event or anything else for that matter. In which case the filter would be all records, IOW .T.
2-In this plain vanilla lookup if the user types the beginning letters and then presses the arrow button, it will only show those values starting with this letter(s). So why is this an issue? I suppose its an issue, or so it seems to you, since you haven't gotten through step 1, the filter. Just put .t. for filter and go from there.
And while you are at it, use places for order.

Re: How to build a dynamic lookup in a dropdown?

The way I got this to work, by a method shown to me many moons ago, was to have a variable field on the form. In my case it was named lookup.
This meant the filter had a value to work with. Any value entered into the variable first made the filter work.

The filter looked like this containsi(Company,"*"+TRIM(var->lookup)+"*")

              Good luck.

How to build a dynamic lookup in a dropdown?

                Hi Gabriel,
What I need is that the dropdown should show all values that contain the typed-in letters, not only those that begin with the typed-in letters. As you can see in attachment C of my first post, for "an" you get Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco and New Orleans.

                Keith,
Your solution is a nice one and probably the one I'll finally adopt. I was just wondering if it could be done (without a lot of coding) the way I was trying.

                Mike,
I'm posting the database in a zipped file. If anything is missing, please advise me and I'll work on it.

I dont think so. As I said before if you are wanting to perform a filter on the lookup, it will need a value to work with. I dont know of another way to do what you want, without a lot more coding.

Re: How to build a dynamic lookup in a dropdown?

I agree with Keith. It will require coding. I use this so much I have it in my code library. You could use a progressive lookup that has that capability (see attached). It works well for lookups of small tables. When tables get big (>2000 records), you have to have the lookup wait until 2-3 letters are typed before the choice list is populated.

Very neat solution but as we both stated, required extra coding.
