Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Add Table Field onto other form connected to different table

    Hello,

I have had a look around and tried to find a solution but had no success.

I have a form connected to table-a and it has fields from table a added.

I have another table that has the name table-b.

I want to put a field from table-b to the form that is connected to table-a.

Tried adding a subform but the form in question with the field is not visible in the options drop down menu.

I could do this in VB but xbasic is a bit more tricky.

    Thank You

    Joe

Join Table a to Table b through a common Field in a Set. Same length, same data type.
Copy the For you have to the new Set
Edit the form and your additional fields will be available to add in.

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.

      Joe,

Is the data in table-b logically related only to the data in the current record displayed from table-a?

Hi Tom, no the data is not related at all.

I did what Ted suggested and it has worked.

If you have another way please let me know Tom.

Ted you are a genius. Thank you for both in posting and attempting to help me its appreciated.

        Regards

        Joe

Re: Add Table Field onto other form connected to different table

If the data from table-b is being placed on the form for display only (not for edits) then it can be "looked up" or "retrieved" by script or expression, stored in a variable, and the variable displayed on the form.

            Thanks Tom for that.

I have no idea how to do what you suggested though.

I could do this easily in vb code.

If you have a quick sample I could look at that would be great.

            Thanks Again.

              Joe,

This kind of thing is often discussed in terms of loading application wide variables on startup. This article at www.learn alpha.com may be of help.

              Other ideas recently discussed here.

No thanks necessary Joe, glad it worked. You will soon get the feel of things once you dump the VB approach .
When I started there was no Forum just a Dos version running on Windows 3.11. Ahhh Happy Days messing with Autoexecs!

                    Hi Ted,

I had to change this and add this in as a variable. A bit of mucking around I sorted it out.

Having a linked table did not work because the text was missing from the field even though data was added. It may be a setting I did not set properly though.

                    You guys rock.

Overall I am happy with what I have done so far in very little time.

Just need to see if I can speed up the load time.

A little trick I have discovered which I was alerted to previously is you can use the genie but then you can view the actual code to see how it was coded.

                    Thanks Again

                      That's a beauty, eh?

Keep that up and we'll be looking for answers from you really soon....

As far as speeding up the load time, we can only guess without a more definitive example/explanation. It can always be made to be fast - just a question of what is actually being dealt with.

Absolutely and if you love tinkering with code Alpha 5 will speed up the development time because its a matter of copy and pasting and changing a couple of field names etc If your doing repetitive tasks based on variables as an example.

I have tested a couple of trial versions in the past 3 years and this version is awesome.

Can't wait for v11 in which hopefully charts can be added into reports just like Crystal Reports.
