Script to Function

I'm working toward an AJAX callback using a function. I know that's a WebServer question.

I created an append operation. It worked correctly, appending 2 of 3 fields from one dbf to another.

I converted that into a script with this code, called "append". With very little adjustment, it worked correctly:

dim a_tbl as p
a_tbl = table.open("mom2")
append.t_db = "c:\program files\a5v10\learning xbasic\mom.DBF"
append.m_key = ""
append.t_key = ""
append.m_filter = ""
append.t_filter = ""
append.type = "All"
append.m_count = 2
append.m_field1 = "Date"
append.m_exp1 = "@Mom->Date"
append.m_field2 = "Id"
append.m_exp2 = "@Mom->Id"
append.t_count = 0
a_tbl.append()

Then I wanted to run the code from a function, so I created this, but nothing happens when I run it:

FUNCTION AppendTO AS C ( )
AppendTo=script_play("append")
END FUNCTION

I suspect someone will solve this quickly. I'm new to programming, but I'm making progress due to all the great help here!

Rob,

Replace the second line of your function with the entire content of your script and you should have a working function.
Function is called as AppendTO()

Jo has the answer but if you want to know why, script_play() has the syntax

Success_Flag as L = SCRIPT_PLAY( Script_Name [ @ library_name ] as C )

so you were trying to assign a logical value to a character variable.

I would additionally suggest you do it this way.

Function AppendTo as L ()
AppendTo = .F. 'default return value
dim a_tbl as p
a_tbl = table.open("mom2")
append.t_db = "c:\program files\a5v10\learning xbasic\mom.DBF"
append.m_key = ""
append.t_key = ""
append.m_filter = ""
append.t_filter = ""
append.type = "All"
append.m_count = 2
append.m_field1 = "Date"
append.m_exp1 = "@Mom->Date"
append.m_field2 = "Id"
append.m_exp2 = "@Mom->Id"
append.t_count = 0
a_tbl.append()
AppendTo = .T. 'if function completes without error we get to here
End Function

Then the usage would be something like

if appendto()
'completed ok
else
ui_msg_box("Alert", "Append to did not process to completion.")
end
end if

If the append operation is meant to operate on tables in the database directory I would change

append.t_db = "c:\program files\a5v10\learning xbasic\mom.DBF"

to

append.t_db = a5.get_path()+chr(92)+"mom.DBF"

Thank you both; neither solution worked, nor did another small script to function. So my next question is, will a function work by clicking it once, then by clicking the "run" lightning bolt? That's what I've been doing, and none of the functions I've tried have worked. Silly question, I realize.

No, you need to 'call' the function.

Go to the interactive window in the code editor and enter

?AppendTo()

then with the cursor on that line hit enter. This will execute that line of code.

or create a new SCRIPT, (not a function) and copy into it Stan's suggested test code. The lightning bolt works on scripts but not directly on functions.

For testing purposes I sometimes will add a line above the function code that calls the function (without the question mark) so I can use the lightning bolt.
