Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Report- adding spurious blank lines when a field or variable is added

I have created a report and it worked. I then wanted to include some extra fields or variable in the header but when I add them it creates spurious blank lines in the detail section.

    See attached video.

Has anyone come across this before or have any idea how to stop it or what I have done wrong?

I wasn't able to open your zip (I am sure I need to download something to open it)..but your description suffices. Are you using soft returns with these variables?

Re: Report- adding spurious blank lines when a field or variable is added

      Hi G,

The attached file is a zipped flash file (swf). I downloaded it and it played in adobe player without any problems. I have version 10 of adobe player. I tried attaching a zippped avi file but it still exceeded the file size limit for the board.

I stated variable but should have said calculated field. It appears that it is only happening with one grandchild and great grandchild table. There are a number of other grandchild tables and the fields from these do not cause a problem.

I'm not sure why content in the header is having this effect in the detail area. I haven't done an awful lot with reports but I thought the areas were seperate and shouldn't effect each other.

Variables do not cause a problem but a calculated field does even when the calculated field is for only the first four characters of the field content.

I just downloaded the newest version of Flash player yesterday. I will try again.. but it seems there is more to this than meets the eye. Are you sure there are not "hidden" objects (fields you might have placed, later deleted, or overlapped by other objects, or perhaps a conditional object) in the detail section?

No extras. Even created a new report with just the basic fields. That's how I worked out it was just the fields from a particular grandchild and great grand child tables causing it to happen. It happens even if the field is placed in the footer. Basically if a field from those two tables is placed in the header or footer the problem occurs.

Thanks G. It didn't solve the problem but highlighted that another set of records are being printed when a field from that table is included in the header. I tried playing around with the filter but couldn't get it working. The report was based on the data entry set so I created a new set designed for printing the report (I think they call it a reverse set). This seems to have worked without any problems.

Thanks for your help it steered me in the right direction.
