Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Accessing and programming actions in browser column events in version 10.5

    Hi

I would like to carry out checks and actions on browser column fields when changing values or on departure from the fields (which I can do on Form fields). For example when I change a value in a column field, I would like to check the value of another field for the same record.

Question: Is this available and if so how and where do I access the relevant events?

    Help will be much appreciated.

    Raj

    Browse
    ..Events [on row change etc]
    or for deeper work
    ..Events
    ....Events [Select Object]

This really belongs in the V10 posts Raj

      Look HERE

Scroll down to the discussion of events for browse controls. You'll find the onChange event there, with a simple example.

        Hi Ted

Thanks for your prompt response. Ideally I would like to do checks on exist (ondepart) from a column field. As you have suggested right clicking on Browse1, then clicks on Events, Events and Object does not display any of the fields in the Browser. Am I missing anything.

I do not see the onchange event which I believe may have been present in Version 8.00. Unfortunately, I am using version 10.5.

        Thanks

        Raj

              Hi Ted

Thanks a lot. Got the onchange working. However is it possible to carry out xbasic actions on the browser column (fields) on onarrive and ondepart events?

                  Hi Ted

Thanks. I believe these are browse1 events and not the individual column field events.

I did try them and the only one that works for me is the onchange.

I am coming to the conclusion that only onchange is supported in Alpha Five.

I was trying to do something similar to what Corel Paradox application allows me to do.

Your input is most appreciated and welcome.

                  Look forward to your comments.

                  Regards

                    Hi Tom

Thanks a lot. Yes, managed to get onchange working. However what about other column (browser fields) events such as ondepart, onarrive etc? Are these one supported at browser fields level?

There are however methods to get current info on a browse, like what field has focus, field values etc.
Which in turn allow one to invoke actions externally. Explain what you want to do.

                          Hi

Please see the attached Word file with a screen shot of my Alpha five browser page.

In the browser I have rows of appointments which are initialised but not yet allocated. When focus is on field CHI, a check is made to insure that the SLOT fields is not marked as "H" (Holiday), if so a warning message is given indicating that an appointment cannot be booked and no further action is taken.

On departure from the CHI field, if SLOT field is marked as "A" (Available), then an appointment is made. The CHI field which is a lookup field will populate the essential details in the remaining fields and the SLOT will change to "B" (Booked). I am aware that this can be achieved by using the onchange function.

                          Thanks

                          Raj

Okay, how would I carry out the check on arrive to the CHI field prior to any changes to it.
