Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Filter on embedded browse based on blank child records

I have an embedded browse based upon a simple One - to- Many set.

There are only 2 fields in the embedded browse.
    Hawb is from Parent Table
    Mawb is from Child Table

I wish to create a filter that will display all records from the Parent table (Hawb) where the mawb is empy (blank).
    EmBrowse.jpg

I would think there would be an easy way to accomplish this in a query but have not had much luck.

    Best,

    Lar

      Zeljko,

Thanks for responding, however, the linking field is HAWB. HAWB is the key field (no dupes in the Parent) and just indexed (HAWB) in the child as well. When I place Childtable->Mawb = "" this is what I receive.
      EmBrowse1.jpg

      Tried that... Any other thoughts?

      Best regards and thanks again.

I think your problem is with setting-up of SET, and/or with linking keys.

              Ted,

              Ted,
Thanks so much for the reply, however that is not what I need.
The HAWB displayed comes from the Parent table - HAWB, not the MAWB..

The browse basically says, that a HAWB has not been created yet in the Child table. (my child table is a "bridge or linking" table.) I need to know what records (hawbs) have not been attached to the linking (child) table. I hope I am clear here.

A SQL statement would look like this..

              (parent) (child)
              SELECT Hawb.HAWB, Mawbhawb.Mawb
FROM Hawb LEFT JOIN Mawbhawb ON Hawb.HAWB = Mawbhawb.HAWB
              WHERE (((Mawbhawb.Mawb) Is Null));

Any suggestions are greatly welcomed. Stumped.

                Larry,

What fields are used to link the parent and child tables?

There's a big difference between a filter that shows parent table records that have no linked child records at all, and a filter that shows all the parent records that are linked to children that meet certain filter criteria. Which are you attempting here?

If it's the latter, I'd create a new set, inverting the original relationship. Let the child be parent, and the parent be child. Use a 1:1 link. Base your browse on the new set, and filter for the blank mawb.

                  HawbMawbBrowse.jpg

                  Tom, Thanks for replying..

                  The set is as follows:

                  Parent table - HAWB
HAWB = Key field - No dupes
                  Child table - MAWBHAWB
                  Link Field HAWB
One - to - many relationship
                  ---------------------------------
What I am attempting to do is..

Query records to display only the HAWBFromHAWBTable where the MAWBFromMawbHawbTable (or HAWBFromMawbHawbTable) is blank

Display records 6063266,6009300,147825,6103808,6009287 and 12345695. In other words, the above records have not been entered into the MawbHawb table.

Hope I am being clear here.

Re: Filter on embedded browse based on blank child records

                      Mike,
No it doesn't. The reason is...

The HAWB table is our order entry table.
The HAWBMAWB is a "bridge" or "linking" table, hence, a HAWB or MAWB will not exist until we enter it into the HAWBMAWB table.

So, I need to present in a browse to my staff all HAWBS that require action..

Hope I am making my self clear here...

Larry, ok, my idea of using an inverted one to one set will do the trick.

                          Tom,

It won't.. Reason is.. The HAWB has not been entered into the (inverted parent).

That is why the Parent must be the HAWB table. I need to provide a list of HAWB's that have not been entered into the HAWBMAWB table.

If you look at my last .jpg it displays the ad hoc set. Column 1 displays the HAWB from the HAWB table. Then next 2 columns display the HAWB and MAWB only if the HAWB has been attached. I need a list (browse) of those HAWBS that have not been entered into the HAWBMAWB table, hence, they do not appear.

Am I missing something here? I think so.. This should be rather easy. I just performed same in Access and another db...

                              Larry,
Firstly, what you showed is NOT an embedded browse. It is a Browse layout. The attached example has a button on the column of the browse layout that runs a script that filters the browse to the blanks.

And your zip file contains no tables.
