Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Citrix server PDF file problem

I have a v10 desktop application with the Runtime and desktop app installed on a Citrix virtual server running on Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 Standard. The system it is virtualised on is XenCentre Advanced Version 6.

There are 3 user machines running the desktop app. Two of these are running Windows 7 and the other XP.

The Alpha Five Printer v4 will not allow reports to be saved to a PDF file from the Preview toolbar icon, neither will it allow the layout to be emailed.

I have tried to set the printer properties to Port NUL and Print direct to the printer as recommended in other posts regarding PDF file report problems but nothing seems to work.

I would appreciate any suggestions from anyone who has been able to save PDF files with a Citrix server setup.

Mike, I'm unfamiliar with your setup. It's not standard. May I ask why are you using Citrix virtual server? Have you asked the folks at Citrix for assistance?

Re: Citrix server PDF file problem

Thanks for replying Tom. My clients use a recently installed Citrix server which is quite popular here in Guernsey as 2 of the main hardware systems providers supply it to various financial and comercial businesses in Guernsey and its sister channel islands.

The problem is that the Alpha Five runtime and my desktop application have been installed on the server not on the c: drive of the local main user machine and shadowing to the 2 other licenced user machines is not possible. In the latter cases the fixes for the alpha five printer pdf file creation work OK. As soon as the runtime and my app are put on the server (as insisted on by the systems supplier for security and backup purposes) it is not possible to create pdfs or email reports as I describe earlier.

The way I see it is that there is a conflict between the A5 printer driver, Citrix and Adobe Reader version X. I haven't been able to trace the conflict and the systems suppliers consider that it is not their problem. There are complicated security login passwords and I am inclined to think they have a bearing on the problem. I was hoping that someone in the Alpha community has a Citrix pdf fix.

I do appreciate your comments and thought provoking questions. Thanks Tom.

          Mike, that's a pickle.

You might try the Amyuni web site, and their tech support people. Perhaps they have experience with Citrix virtual servers...

            Mike,

I am having a similar problem with a client using Go-Global to access a desktop app from multiple computers over the internet. Based on Toms suggestion I found this link on the Amyuni Forum.

            http://www.amyuni.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2332

Haven't had time to look into it yet but if these suggestions help I will let you know.

Re: Citrix server PDF file problem

I'm not clear on what you are doing.
Are you running a mixture of shadowed and not shadowed?

Normally, if you are using Citrix or T/S, everything runs on the server - not the work station. And as a rule you have to have all devices and printers and printer drivers installed on both the workstation and the server.

what version of Adobe are you using. I've had another developer tell me some users are having problems with the most recent Adobe.

Adobe will have to be installed on the server, of course.

PS: when you save a report to PDF - you are not "printing" it, you are having Alpha use the amyuni driver convert the report to a PDF - you NEVER print to Alpha's printer driver.

Re: Citrix server PDF file problem

Thanks Tom and Martin for your help.

I tried the Amyuni website but could not find anything further to help. Everything is on the Citrix server. There is no shadowing involved.

I think I confused things when I tried to explain the citrix setup by comparing it to shadowing in a different setup. Sorry.

The Adobe version is X (10 i.e. the most recent). That could be the problem.

I appreciate Martin's point about never printing to the Alpha printer drive.

Re: Citrix server PDF file problem

Thanks for your link Rod. I checked that out but didn't get any further. However I contacted a different local citrix dealer and he gave me a solution to my problem.

I downloaded the CutePDF printer for creating PDF documents (see link below) it's free and works very well when added to the citrix printers list.

                  www.cutepdf.com/

If anyone is downloading, it’s the “CutePDF Writer (Freeware)” you’re after.

Just a bit of extraneous info....Alpha is not the only software with PDF issues at times...I have a version of QuickBooks that I had to use CutePDF with in order to save anything as PDF (works well).
