Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Can you not run a Query on a Form's Calculated field?

    Say I want All Invoices > 1000?

Jeff, if you're talking about a calculated display field, defined in the form, then the answer is no. These are simply variables for which specific computations have been defined. They are not stored in the table and values do not persist when the user navigates from record to record. Alpha has no way to compare the computed values from record to record.

        seems I'm GETTING LESS..
Neither I nor Alpha Software can manage your expectations.

But, if you need to sort a table based on a computed field value, just use a table field, and define a calc field rule for it. No big deal. Piece of cake.

If you need to see a computed value in your form, but don't want to use a table field, define a calc display field in the form. No big deal. Piece of cake.

If you don't want to use a table field, and you don't mind doing a bit of work there are several ways of writing a custom script that will extract the records which meet your query spec.

And, perhaps most obviously, have you tried using the calc display computation expression in your filter expression? This should achieve the same result without using the calc display field object itself.

Lots of options. Lots of flexibility.

I think it seems that way to you because you are trying to use Alpha they way you used Lotus. I started using Alpha after a 20 year break in programming with Pascal. I had no expectations of Alpha other than I would be able to get it to do what I want. When I first started using Alpha I did find myself saying "I wish I could do this or that" based on my experiences with Pascal but with the help of the good folks here and a lot of reading I am finding out how to do those things with Alpha, be it just another way.

The members of this forum are not going to write your code for you. If you want or need that then there are plenty of people to hire. What you will find is that the members here will throw you some bones that can help point you in the right direction. While this may be a slow way to get to your end result at least you will know how you got there once you get there.

I have been working on my app for over 4 months now and have fought many a battle with trying to get it to do what I want but now I am seeing daylight and should be releasing my app in a few weeks. I know it gets frustrating but just hang in there and it will come together.
