Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Performance

    Hello

We have an application with a simple set for managing quotes.

A button named Line on activates takes the user down to the child table to input data regarding to the product being quoted.

On a 4 user network (a dedicated machine with 4 gig of Ram and XP is being used as the server) the speed at which the button displays the form varies considerably.

On a windows 7 machine it is instant, but on the other 3 machines which are XP SP3 there is a delay of 3-4 seconds.

All workstations have 3 gig of ram and the network is gigabit.

Why the delay on the XP machines?

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Kind regards

    Alex

      Re: Performance

If all workstations have a gigabit network card, and are configured for full duplex, and all intermediate switches (used to be called hubs) are gigabit, and you have gigabit cables in all locations - should work ok.

However, I had a client run cat 6 home runs for ALL workstations back to the main switch, (they are running Server 2008 R2 Standard,) and different workstations are faster than others.

I have never found documentation to support my suspicion, but I suspect that where you have mixed workstations, (XP and W7,) there could be performance issues.

Also, if you are on a "shared" network, then you will never get the performance that a dedicated server will offer. If you do decide to get a dedicated server, be sure to get 2008 R2 Standard - not anything higher. Otherwise you cannot disable opportunistic record locking.

Are the XP workstations configured to do live (real time) anti-virus and malware checking?

          Re: Performance

The PCs are configured that the shadow folder is not scanned and there are no scheduled virus scans on each workstation.

IIRC the Alpha data folder on the server or at least dbf and cdx files are not scanned.

            Re: Performance

You might try disabling the real time anti-virus package entirely (client work stations and server), and then comparing performance.

There is something going on with SMB on windows 7 / server 2008 machines with dbf's (smb 2.0 to be precise)
I have a client that runs an app since 1994 and had to do the reg file at the machine HOSTING the dbf's

here is some more reading on others having issues...

maybe I need to do this to my machine as alpha hasn't been my friend..
