Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Report Error When Saving (zip:Couldn't open to write)

Not sure what to do with this one.

When I create a report and add the fields that I want and then save the report i get the following error (zip: couldn't open to write) and then it will not let me do anything else. Here are some items about my report and when I have tried so far.
    • The report is based off from a set.
    • I have tried this on other sets and still get the same results.
    • The report that is in error disappears once it is closed.
    • I am able to initially save the report. It is only after awhile that I get this error and then all my work is lost.
    • After the error i can save the report under another name and everything is normal....for awhile.
    • After the error I am not able to save the report as a previously named report that has had the error. (i.e Save "report1" that has the error as "report2" then delete "reoprt1" and save "report2" as "report1")

Update...Added a screen shot of another error. What i was trying to do is duplicate the good report with the name of a report that was in error and disappeared.

    Couple of things to try
    1) Process Monitor - Windows Tool can show you what files are being accessed and errors reported via the file system. Using Process Monitor when this error is genereated you may be able to determine what file is causing the hang up as well as what the true error message is.

    2) I would wager this is related to the backup copies Alpha5 creates during database development. It is possible that the zip backup file is corrupt or file/folder permissions are causing problems.

Re: Report Error When Saving (zip:Couldn't open to write)

I have moved my project over to a file that I know has read/write folder permissions. I am still getting the following error when I try and duplicate the report to a report name that I used previously and it went into error and disappeared.

What Layout is it referring to?

I had a look into the .set and .Sex files and see the old report names... How do i edit these files?

Are all of the sets doing this or just this one?
Have you tried with a report based off of a single table?

If I bumped into this, I'd create a good backup of everything, then I'd "compact the database". This is an option on the "File" menu of the Alpha Five Control Panel.

What i did do was move the project files to a drive that I knew that I had exclusive rights to. This is because I realized after Andrews comment about file permissions
It is possible that the zip backup file is corrupt or file/folder permissions are causing problems.
that I was developing on a company PC and the project path was in a "cache"

All in all i re-created the set and re-built the report with the project moved and it has been working smoothly. (For Now)
