Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    App Start w/o main A5 window ?

I have searched the forum and wiki thinking this must have been answered since its so basic but I couldn't find it. In desgining my app I want the forms in the app to run outside of the main A5 window. I am guessing there must be a way to hide that from the application forms. I have looked at AlphaSports but even it opens with the main A5 screen in the background. It seems distracting to me and very MS Access like which again I am trying to avoid. This must be easy but darned if I can find the settings.

Perhaps it is in the installer program which I have not yet looked at.

    Hi John,

Are you asking about opening a form and not seeing the Menu or Toolbar, if so look at form properties in design mode. You can switch both to None there.

That is alot 'more' better and I can live with that format.

I hope my memory is correct on this but it appears A5 runs apps as MDI. I think what I am looking to learn is whether a SDI, with the form being the single document, and with the menus being on the the forms. I realize I need to create the menus, toolbars etc.

Anyway I appreciate the help, I am still in design and layout mode, so getting the best look to my app that I can consistently apply to the whole project is important. This is my first serious attempt with A5 so there is much I do not know.

I'm on vacation and can't give the specifics. If you are speaking of the A5 menu, you can, in design mode, create a short cut, and tell Alpha which form to open. This will bypass the A5 menu and the installer gives this option also. if you start your program directly from the A5 Icon on you desktop/laptop you get the A5 menu. Not really a menu but a big blue, green, or red cube. Is this what you are trying to avoid? Maybe someone near their A5 program will chime in for better instructions.

Sent from my IPad. I love this thing... Now if I knew how to get my program to run on it!!!

Thanks for taking the time to respond. It's really more about just having form window open without seeing the larger blue A5 window open in the background. That larger window acts like a container for the forms. It is that container window I am trying to hide.

Sorry. For this proving so hard to describe. Thanks again!

            John,

Have you looked at creating your own Splash for start up?

              Thanks Keith for the suggestion.

As I have continued my search I ran across this in the wiki. If I read this correctly it appears A5 does not do a true SDI interface. I likely won't have a chance to try this until tomorrow to see how close it gets me.

              SDI Style Applications

You can create applications that resemble SDI (Single Document Interface) applications. A SDI application does not have min/max/restore buttons on the menu bar. To specify a SDI style application, select File > Database Properties and select the Turn off Min/Max check box. ( Note : This check box only appears if you have specified a startup Form, and if you have specified that the startup form should be maximized

                Hi John,

There are 2 ways I think you can achieve what your are looking for.

First way is to create everything in Xdialog, which by default is SDI. If you don't want to see the Alpha Five window, do a A5.HIDE() while the XDialogs are open (make sure you do an A5.SHOW() to make it visible) when required.

Second way is to use forms etc, but maximize them in Alpha Five. You will only have 1 form visible at any one time. You can also change the A5.title to your liking, and eliminate/change the original Alpha menu, Alpha toolbars and Alpha's "WindowBar This allows you have a Windows MDI of Alpha Five, but essentially an SDI to Alpha Five.

Thanks Ira...that puts the finishing touches on what I needed. Tomorrow will be a big day of experimentation for me. I hope I can get the look I have in mind done.

Again, thanks to everyone for being so helpful. It is appreciated!

Re: App Start w/o main A5 window ?

I have been experimenting with a test database and found using the suggestions everyone made I can get the look I want. For anyone wanting to use and SDI type interface language from the wiki suggestion gets you started. Then following the suggestions about the menus and toolbars (turning off the default system ones in the form properties gets it even closer. I confess I am still struggling to control window size in A5 but I will eventually figure it out. In Visual Studio the window/form size is independent of the IDE and I have not yet found the A5 secret for that to happen. I am still learning the nuances in moving from VS to A5 so I will keep on...

Thanks for the help, very much appreciated and it resolved my problems
