Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    USPS Function Problems

    Is anyone else having problems with the USPS lookup functions? I had a client complain yesterday that the function Lenny put together for us in Feb. 2012, here, was not working, it is not returning any data. I then tested the usps_citystate_from_zip() function and in all tests it took a full 2 minutes to return the result. If anyone else has time to test it I would appreciate it.

    Thanks, Rod

    From the release notes for V11

    USPS Functions - The following functions have been updated. These function work by 'scraping' the response from a query made to the USPS web site. From time to time the USPS changes the layout of their screens, which result in the need to update the following functions.
    USPS_City_From_ZIP()
    USPS_CityState_From_ZIP()
    USPS_Delivery_Status()
    USPS_State_From_ZIP()
    USPS_ZipCode_Lookup()
    There can be only one.

      Re: USPS Function Problems

      Hi Stan,

      Thanks for the quick response. So is there a way to update the function in V10 or some other workaround/better solution?

        Re: USPS Function Problems

        It seems to be working for me as is, but I'm using V11

        ? USPS_Zipcode_Lookup2("841 Ironwood Dr","Bowling Green","KY")
        = "42103-1521"
        There can be only one.

          Rod,

          Check the USPS web site. It seems the city_state_zip list contains over 100,000 entries and is available on CD. I'm not sure what the fee might be. The web site does mention that you must purchase a license from the USPS if you intend to distribute copies.

          It's possible that various private sources for this might also exist.

          I mention this because with the source list you could build your own lookup functions.

            Re: USPS Function Problems

            I just tried it in v11 and it did not like the name
            ? USPS_Zipcode_Lookup2("841 Ironwood Dr","Bowling Green","KY")
            gave a NOT RECOGNIZED error.
            I had to take the 2 out of it

            Is that a download from somewhere?

            OK I got it - very nice

              Re: USPS Function Problems

              The specific function I was having trouble with was usps_citystate_from_zip(). In V10 it does still work but takes a minimum of two minutes to return a value. In V11 it works fine. I found in researching this issue that apparently the USPS does not appreciate anyone using these functions for other that mailing purposes. I tried to contact the postal service about purchasing the current Zip Code table but have yet to receive a response, (sequester I guess).

              I looked elsewhere and found one other place http://ziptasticapi.com. A very simple function to retrieve the information.

              Code:
              function USPS_Zipcode_Lookup3 as p (zip5 as c)
              	dim Result			as p
              	dim WebServiceURI	as c	= "http://ziptasticapi.com/"
              	dim txt				as c

              	zip5		= left(ltrim(zip5),5)
              	Result		= http_get(WebServiceURI + zip5)
              	txt 		= result.body

              	USPS_Zipcode_Lookup3.City	= remspecial(word(txt,6))
              	USPS_Zipcode_Lookup3.State	= remspecial(word(txt,4))
              end function
              I am not real confident about how long this one will remain available either. I think for my clients the best bet is to purchase a zip code data base and provide a local lookup for them.

              Thanks everyone for your time.
              Rod
