Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    alltrim and file.create syntax

I have an XBasic function that uses file.create to create a text file.
    One line reads this: file_pointer.write_line("SYS_APPNAME = "+ chr(34)+tbl.sys_appname + chr(34))

and it yields this: SYS_APPNAME = "ABCDE "
where ABCDE is the data in the field.

I would like it to yield this: SYS_APPNAME = "ABCDE"
Note: the trailing blanks are removed.

I've tried the Alltrim() function but I just can't seem to get the syntax right.
I always get a message "Argument is incorrect data type"

What am I missing here ?

    Thanks.

What Al said. But, also have you tried alltrim(tbl.sys_appname) in the line in question?

        Re: alltrim and file.create syntax

Another possibility is using the concatenation operator with trim ie -

        file_pointer.write_line("SYS_APPNAME = "+ chr(34)+tbl.sys_appname - chr(34))

Here is a list of all the variations I tried and their errors reported:

          file_pointer.write_line(alltrim("SYS_APPNAME = "+ chr(34)+tbl.sys_appname + chr(34)))
no error warning but didn't work either

          alltrim(file_pointer.write_line("SYS_APPNAME = "+ chr(34)+tbl.sys_appname + chr(34)))
          Argument is incorrect data type

          file_pointer.write_line("SYS_APPNAME = "alltrim(+ chr(34)+tbl.sys_appname) + chr(34))
          Argument is incorrect data type

          file_pointer.write_line("SYS_APPNAME = "+ chr(34)alltrim(+tbl.sys_appname) + chr(34))
          Argument is incorrect data type

          file_pointer.write_line("SYS_APPNAME = "+ chr(34)(alltrim(+tbl.sys_appname)) + chr(34))
          Argument is incorrect data type

Any ideas what I'm missing ?

            or use what Tim suggested

              John,

The only issue you began with was that there were one or more trailing spaces generated by

              file_pointer.write_line("SYS_APPNAME = "+ chr(34)+tbl.sys_appname + chr(34))

              yielding SYS_APPNAME = "ABCDE "

That would lead one to believe that the only part of your expression that needed alltrim was the part that supplied the ABCDE in "ABCDE ".

Applying alltrim() to only that portion would seem to be indicated, no?

              Note that

              file_pointer.write_line("SYS_APPNAME = "+ chr(34)+tbl.sys_appname + chr(34))

              can be written

              file_pointer.write_line("SYS_APPNAME = "+ quote(tbl.sys_appname))

              There can be only one.

                Allen, that did the trick.

I tried Tim's suggestion with no luck.

                Thanks.

Did you try what I suggested? (Basically Allen's suggestion.) For that matter Tim's suggestion should work too, so we would need to see exactly how you tried any of these suggestions.

                    This line worked :
                    file_pointer.write_line("SYS_APPNAME = "+ chr(34)+(alltrim(tbl.sys_appname)) + chr(34))

                    Thanks again.

Good. But for future reference, Tim's suggestion
                      Code:
                      file_pointer.write_line("SYS_APPNAME = "+ chr(34)+tbl.sys_appname - chr(34))
should also work, and so should the following, incorporating Stan's point:
                      Code:
                      file_pointer.write_line("SYS_APPNAME = "+ quote(Rtrim(tbl.sys_appname))

                        John

I prefer to use the interactive window to help build code and test it piece by piece...

So I would build a variable that contains the command that I want to execute like this...

                        Code:
                        tbl.sys_appname="test "

                        cmd="SYS_APPNAME = "+ chr(34)+tbl.sys_appname + chr(34)

                        ?cmd
                        = SYS_APPNAME = "test "

                        cmd="SYS_APPNAME = "+ chr(34)+alltrim(tbl.sys_appname) + chr(34)

                        ?cmd
                        = SYS_APPNAME = "test"

                        file_pointer.write_line(cmd)
