Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Filename pointer function

    Hi All,

    Looking for some help with a function to that points A5 to a folder by just looking the first word of the folder.

    Key matching word is (first word) Dell

    Folder to open:
    Dell Computer

    I tried word() but this looks for folders using only the first word and will not find a match. Seems like I need to parse?

    Re: Filename pointer function

    Not clear what you're doing. What do you mean by folder to open? Are you wanting to open the folder with sys_explore(), ui_get_file()?

    If you want to get the full directory name of a directory under a specific directory based on a first word, this works for me.

    ? filefind.first("C:\U2*",FILE_FIND_DIRECTORY).name()
    = "C:\U2 Rattle and Hum"

    ? filefind.first("C:\New*",FILE_FIND_DIRECTORY).name()
    = "C:\New Database"

      Re: Filename pointer function

      I think I'm on to something with the smatch_to() function. I'm using sys_open(filename) where filename is an expression based on my input variable (the first word)

        Re: Filename pointer function

        sys_open(filefind.first("C:\New*",FILE_FIND_DIRECTORY).name())

        opens the "c:\new database" directory in windows explorer.

        As does

        input = "New"
        sys_open(filefind.first("C:\\"+var->input+"*",FILE_FIND_DIRECTORY).name())
        There can be only one.

          Re: Filename pointer function

          thanks stan I'll experiment with this. My input variable will be the first word, I want A5 to open the directory matching the first word regardless of what the full folder name is. Here is a better example:

          I have my PartNumber as the variable. My folders start with the PartNumber and then a Description which is why I just need just match the first word.

          PartNumber = 2334456
          Open matching folder -> '2334456 sony printer documentation'

            That's what my example does.

              Stan I wanted to clarify, Part_Number is not a variable but rather a field. Here is the Xbasic action:

              DIM filename as c
              filename = (filefind.first("\\HP_OFFICE\PART DOCUMENTATION"+ALLTRIM(Part_Number)+"*",FILE_FIND_DIRECTORY).name())
              if file.exists(filename) then
              sys_open(filename)
              else
              ui_msg_box("Error Opening File","File '"+filename+"' does not exist.",ui_stop_symbol)
              end if

              I'm receiving error variable "Part_number" not found. Any ideas?

                Re: Filename pointer function

                Where does part_number exist? Are you viewing a form and part_number is an object on the form?

                DIM filename as c
                filename = (filefind.first("\\HP_OFFICE\PART DOCUMENTATION"+ALLTRIM(Part_Number.value)+"*",FILE_FIND_DIRECTORY).name())
                if file.exists(filename) then
                sys_open(filename)
                else
                ui_msg_box("Error Opening File","File '"+filename+"' does not exist.",ui_stop_symbol)
                end if

                If the part_number field has the object name part_number on the form.

                  Yes Part_number field does have an object on the form. When adding .value now I received error 'file " does not exist' seems like there is an extra "?

                    I was missing the \\

                      Re: Filename pointer function

                      out of curiosity, is there a way to have it look at the entire folder name instead of the first word? In other words if it comes up with any matching string. This will be good if I have a folder that lists multiple Part numbers, I'll be sure that the matching Part numbers all open the same folder when necessary.

                        Add the asterix wild card before the field object name as well and remove one backslash.

                        (filefind.first("\\HP_OFFICE\PART DOCUMENTATION\*"+ALLTRIM(Part_Number.value)+"*",FILE_FIND_DIRECTORY).name())

                          After doing as suggested, it continues to work on the first word, however, when tested it on the following Part Number: ASM001393

                          It should have opened folder:
                          \\HP_OFFICE\Part Documentation\5182159 & ASM001393 Rotor PS

                          but it could not find for some reason.

                            Works here

                            input = "ASM001393"
                            ? "C:\part documentation\*"+var->input+"*"
                            = "C:\part documentation\*ASM001393*"

                            ? filefind.first("C:\part documentation\*"+var->input+"*",FILE_FIND_DIRECTORY).name()
                            = "C:\part documentation\5182159 & ASM001393 Rotor PS"
                            sys_open(filefind.first("C:\part documentation\*"+var->input+"*",FILE_FIND_DIRECTORY).name())
                            'opens directory here

                            Shouldn't be any different with alltrim(part_number.value).
