Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    decrypt table problem

    I searched and didn't see an answer. As a final addition to app before releasing, I want to encrypt one table on app close and decrypt on app open. I tested in Interactive window and get the error attached.

    STEP 1:
    dim t as P
    t = table.open("client_info")
    t.encrypt("ABCDEF")
    t.close()

    >>>> looked to see table in Control panel and indeed has key symbol and encrypted.

    STEP 2:
    t = table.open("client_info")
    t.decrypt("ABCDEF")
    t.close()

    >>> error (see attached)

    What do I do now???

    Re: decrypt table problem

    default_encryption_key_set("ABCDEF")
    t = table.open("client_info")
    t.decrypt()
    t.close()

    or

    t = table.open("client_info",FILE_RW_EXCLUSIVE,"client_info","ABCDEF")
    t.decrypt()
    t.close()
    There can be only one.

      Thanks Stan, but neither work. Can you get it to work on your side. I tried in v11 and didn't work there either.

          default_encryption_key_set("ABCDEFi")
          place the encryption key in another script in your app and run it. Mine is always in the autoexec.

          then in the new script or wherever
          dim t as p
          t = table.open("client_info") or (whatever the database name is)
          t.decrypt()
          t.close()

          That will work if the correct key is used.

          I do this constantly for apps

              If one does not set the default encryption key, but uses the tbl methods, you get the same error Mike W is reporting. The docs do not specify that one must use or set a default encryption key. Or, am I missing something?

                just figured something was missing . I know my set default is a different place nd never have run it in the same script.

                Stan and Tom taught me. LOL'

                  Re: decrypt table problem

                  OK, another day and another result. I swear I tried everything, alone and with a partner using TeamViewer looking over my shoulder ... every combination possible. We spent a bunch of time and dozens of tests and couldn't get it to work. But that was yesterday. Today...

                  I place this on the code just before :a5.close() in the script that is called to exit the app:
                  Code:
                  default_encryption_key_set("keyword")
                  dim t as p
                  t = table.open("client_info")
                  t.encrypt()
                  t.close()
                  and this in the very start of the autoexec:
                  Code:
                  default_encryption_key_set("keyword")
                  dim t as p
                  t = table.open("client_info")
                  t.decrypt()
                  t.close()
                  I'm sure that it is that today the moon and mars is aligned just everso.... Thanks guys!

                    Re: decrypt table problem

                    Mike, You don't have to decrypt for alpha to use the table.

                    Alpha knows to let users have access and will, so no need for anything in autoexec except the default line.

                    This part is not needed in autoexec:
                    dim t as p
                    t = table.open("client_info")
                    t.decrypt()
                    t.close()

                    You only need to run this one time ever, I run it in a script and then forget it unless I need to decrypt:
                    Code:
                    dim t as p
                    t = table.open("client_info")
                    t.encrypt()
                    t.close()

                      Re: decrypt table problem

                      Dave is right. Once you encrypt you don't need to decrypt. You do need to pass in the key - usually in the autoexec. The only reason to decrypt is if you wanted to use the table in another db.
