Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Numeric Fields Number Bug

    Hi All

    We have a strange problem with the numbers 105 and 84. Can you please try this simple test:

    1. Create a new table test dbf with three numeric fields 8.2.

    2. Open the default browse and enter the value 105 in each field then create a new record, go back to the fields and type in 84 and commit (only these values seem to create the bug, other values are okay).

    With all our tests the value be saved unless we enter another value.

    Can someone please explain this strange behaviour?

    The same seems to happen in V11.

    Michael

    I see the same strange behavior in v12(build 3522 / 4647).

        Hi Tom

        Not just me then, if you do find a way to explain I would be grateful to hear from you.

          Also strange that 105 - > 84 and 84 -> 105 doesn't work.

          But
          105 -> (any number other than 105 or 84 - or so it seems) -> 84 works...
          and
          84 -> (any number other than 105 or 84 - or so it seems) -> 105 works...

          The field rule OnEditField does fire and as I add more auditing to the onchange - cansave events of a form I see the values changing from what was entered to what was there.....

          Has some one submitted a bug report?

            Re: Numeric Fields Number Bug

            I submitted a bug report earlier today. Cian has identified the source of the issue. Has to do with CRC values used internally to determine if a field value has actually changed. Turns out with this particular numeric specification, these two numbers generate the same CRC value so Alpha doesn't know it changed, and the commit does nothing.

            He's prepared a fix that moves away from using 32 bit CRC for this purpose and expects it to be in a prerelease shortly, for vers 12, of course.

              And is another reason I am leaving Alpha next year. No way would I pay $1,500+ for a bug fix that was their fault and been around at least 6 years, maybe longer.

                  Tom, none of them are "Perfect" but I know where I am going and it is better. Will PM you.

                    Desktop to me is still alpha. I have found none better, but that does not mean it won't change.

                    Web side is a different story altogether, but that may be more a matter of taste.

                      Did you know the v12 runtime checks your subscription status? That means they could, if they wanted, deactivate your v12 runtime once your subscription runs out. They do not do that now but they could down the road.

                        Yes, of course I know. That has nothing to do with the capabilities that fit within my needs.

                          Did not say it had anything to do with fitting your needs. Just pointing it out.

                          For me Alpha just does not fit what I need for desktop or web anymore. But that is me.
