Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Using security and want only one user to mark

    Hi All,
    Not sure if possible or would be easy if it was.
    But I want to setup security on my application(database) so that a selected group can read only and not be able to change or edit or delete any records or info in any field.
    That part I'm sure I can do.
    Now the one I need and want to do is for this group to be able to mark and unmark the records in a particular database and/or browse/form without them being able to edit or delete as stated above.
    Is it possible?

    In a UX You can do that at the control level for any usergroup by simply making a submit button, or any control for instance that has security settings to show it if they belong to a certain usergroup - very easily
    There's a bunch of ways, it could be a show/hide setting, or the controls could be in a container that has security settings.

    IN a grid the detail view's properties allow you to control update/delete/insert by groups, and you can also do the show hide stuff in there as well.

    I am sure there's a bunch of ways I didn't even mention, like in a list control but again if you look around the properties of what ever type of component your using you should be able to find something that works for you.

    Good luck hope that helps!

      Thanks it gives me hope it can be done but I must be little dense cause I'm a little lost on how to do most of that.
      I have some digging and learning to do I guess.

      One question, how do I make a submit button at the control level?

          I believe Charles wandered over from the Mobile/Browser forums and offered advice more suitable in those areas.

              Re: Using security and want only one user to mark

              The easiest way I can think of is to have a form with all fields disabled and a button to mark/unmark records. The onfetch event code would set the button caption appropriately. The form would have appropriate restrictions set in properties for enter, delete, etc.

              Code:
              'button [B]object name [/B]is toggle_mark
              tbl = table.current()
              if tbl.is_marked()
              	toggle_mark.text = "Un-Mark"
              else
              	toggle_mark.text = "Mark"
              end if
              The button code is

              Code:
              parentform.Commit()
              tbl = table.current()
              if tbl.is_marked()
              	tbl.change_begin()
              	tbl.unmark()
              	tbl.change_end()
              	this.text = "Mark"
              else
              	tbl.change_begin()
              	tbl.mark()
              	tbl.change_end()
              	this.text = "Un-Mark"
              end if
              parentform.repaint()
              You would open this form for the security group you want to control and a copy of the form without the disabled fields for full privilege users. It is possible to iterate through the form objects and enable or disable objects based on the security level but it is more complicated.

                    Ok I try it and the button worked as it should without security or as administrator.

                    But I noticed that if you set the security for example on all databases to just view and no changes on the database page, you can't just go to a specific form and just open it up or run it for this specific group to mark for example on this form. It says permission denied.
                    So if I take the security off of the database that this specific form is attached to for this group, and give access only to this group to run this form, would that mean I would have to block access to the current forms and browses and copy them all for this group to access only and disable all the fields.
                    I hope I not rambling on and are making some sense.
