Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Migrating from alpha5v7 to alpha5v11

I am Migrating from alpha5v7 to alpha5v11. My computer went bad and installed my Alpha5v7 backups on different computer with same name. But it wouldn't take my activation code. Alpha support guy James said I'm out of luck, there is no way to reactivate the program. Pretty lousy policy this company has. Forces a repurchase when the computer dies even if you've been diligent about back ups. The fair thing to do is provide a new activation code or a work around for the old program. Totally unfair.

At any rate, I bought Alpha 5v11 and opened up my old database and application in version 11. Everything seems to work except when entering a new record in the Alpha default form, I can enter the parent table part of the set, but when I try to enter into the child table I get an error message that says "cannot open table "patients" to post to." "patients" being the parent table. Odd since the set is open and I wrote to the parent. I have a form I made for this purpose but the child table part of form can't even be entered into at all. it just stays blank with no error message. I started redoing my application for version 11 but it's one headache after another. So I'm hoping I can solve this one problem with entering new records in my old application and database.

Since you have trouble with the default form for the set it would seem your posting is accomplished by field rule. Have you examined the field rule to try to diagnose the issue?

      Don

      Following up on Stan's idea.

Open the child table with the default form or browse. Enter or update a record and save it.

This may cause an index to be generated in the patients table that is needed because of a field rule in the 'child' table.

If that solves the problem, then save the indexes in case it happens again.

Otherwise do as Stan suggested and verify all of the field rules to id the issue.

The browse changed significantly between these versions and for an embedded browse on a form, it would be best to delete the old one, save & close the form, compact the table or set, then add the new browse.

Before you do anything else, look in

            C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming\Alpha Software\Alpha Five Version 11

            for a file

            Activation.key

Copy that file to a backup of some sort, flash drive, etc.

With that file you should be able to reinstall Alpha, enter the license number, and not need to reactivate so long as your replacement machine is given the same computer name. Just copy the activation.key to the same directory on the new machine.

Thanks will do. I have messed up again though. Found a newer version of my old database in a different directory than I expected. Transferred all the files to the workspace directory I had created for the old files to begin with and now that won't even bring up the old database. I have no idea how got them to work in version 11 to begin with. Thought I just created a directory copied the files into it and created a new workspace in that directory. Didn't work though. HELP. Specifically, how to transfer old database form version 7 to version 11.
