Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    FORMS based Security

I'm new to alpha five coming from VB6, I decided to try Alpha Five for my future database development Projects after discarding filemaker and clarion because
i was informed that Alpha Five is easier to learn and more robust.
My Question is: How do build Custom menus and how will i restrict users to access menus with it's own user rights? Menus will be disabled/enabled based on the user
who logged in, and how do i easily add users and select the menus according to the user.
Thank you so much in advance for the valuable information critical for me to decide to use alpha five among others aside from it's lower cost.

Roman, check the help system for "object permissions".

Once your database has enabled security, users have been entered and assigned to groups, you can then customize the behaviors you want using xbasic scripts. i.e. if permission to run a specific report is limited to specific groups, the button that runs the report can check to see whether the current user is a member of any of those groups. If so, the script can run the report, otherwise it can tell the user they don't have permission to run the report.

Ted, if your post was directed to me all I can say is your link led to a 20 post thread which I did not have time to peruse. If my post duplicates what could be discovered by reading the other thread, and studying the example you posted, I apologize.

                    Re: FORMS based Security

Tom, no apologies ever necessary as far as I'm concerned.
We all tend to rub along pretty well - except the chap who questioned your knowledge when you have so many posts and he didn't notice it.

It wasn't meant to upset you or cause you more work, it was meant for Roman.
I realise you know how to do what he's trying to do but the thread content could be important in explaining a couple of option for him.

Perhaps I will be a bit more careful with the flippancy.

Roman, never worry about asking questions.
Alpha has so many great features, that it is often easier to ask how something can be done and get a guilde from the Forum. It may save time and make the learning more enjoyable.

I'l be posting questions then, because I'm really a total newbie in Alpha Five, just started maybe 3 days ago evaluating the latest version.

Is audit trail automatically done in Alpha Five? e.g. the fields to be automatically be populated upon entering new records and editing records in every table are,
at_username,at_Date etc.If we create tables in Alpha Five, do we have to manually enter all the fields for audit trail purpose? or maybe is there a way to add these fields in all the tables in Alpha Five?Thank You!
