Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Fields rules table lookup problem

I am creating a lookup field (dm field - short for dam, which is a female horse)
I followed the instructions 'using field rules to generate a table lookup'

When I select the drop down box on the form the dam names appear and then an id entered into the dm field when I click on the name.
However, if I select a dam name where that dam has more than one offspring I get an error saying value must be unique (I need the dm field to be unique cause it is an id. For example, if you select the horse 'Saturna' from the dropdownlist you'll see an error wrt unique field - you'll also notice the slow latency as you type in the name).

My other issue is that the default value appearing on the dm field now becomes a horses name - which I dont want as this is an id field. Im using the name in the dropdlist to find the correct id.

Also when I enter in letters in the dropdown box the latency is extremely slow. If I create this in a browser as opposed to desktop will the speed be better?

    I hope this makes sense.

I want to attach the database but its 10megs big is there anyway I can email (or put it in dropbox) to someone who can assist?

Re: Fields rules table lookup problem

Steven, may I suggest that you create a test bed or "sand box" copy of your database for use in testing and development. Enter only a handful of representative records. Keep the size small. Will speed development and make it easier to get assistance here.

As a rule this board works better if each thread of messages is limited to a single question or issue. Doing that can be tedious of course, but the beneficial result is that each thread becomes a mini-knowledge base. Very handy for other travelers wandering through the forum later on.

It sounds like you misapprehend what the unique values field rule is intended to do. Or, you're confused about how to relate tables together. An "id" field need not be unique in order to be useful. Why do you want the dm field to be unique when multiple horses may share a common mother? Seems wrong to me.

    Later on...

In the relational system primary keys must be unique, but foreign keys should never be unique. Ok?

Maybe my response to your other thread (below) will help you with this whole concept.

Re: Fields rules table lookup problem

        Thanks for the replies.
I created a sandbox db just with the one table I could upload it here it here but now the problem disappears on my sandbox db.
Is there a way to export my whole current db with only say the first 100 records in each table? I know how to export the raw data but I want to export field rules indexes etc. cause Im clearly missing something when I tired to re create the table.

No but you can copy the contents of the current db directory to a new directory, open it there, delete records, and zip that.
          There can be only one.
