Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Problem with import

I have an ascii import script that has been working well for years (since version 4.5).

Now that I want to use it in V11, it imports every other record.

There are 131 fields per record.
Fields are separated by a ~.
Records are separated by a <LF>.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Was recently involved in something similar, had an odd looking CSV to import but I found that the Operation Genie was very flexible - you can specify any type of record or field delimiter. If you want to at the end of the process you can convert it to xbasic. Worked for me anyway.

      Hi Richard,

The script has been working properly for years. It even appears to work properly
when run in V11. The problem was noticed when I saw 25000 records instead of
      the expected 50000ish records.

Maybe I should ask a different way.
Is there a list of known issues converting to V11 from V10 or earlier ?

          Re: Problem with import

Gregg, as V11 is still quite new, the conversion issues probably will start appearing a bit later.
I presume you recreated the Import Operation in V11?
If not, might be worth editing - change nothing - save and try again.

            Re: Problem with import

            Hi Ted,

I have tried all kinds of things to try to confirm/solve the problem.
This includes copying the directory from the computer with V10.5 to the computer with V11, then running the script.
The results are the V11 computer appears to import every other record.

I have also copied, then modified the script in question with the following results:
            A. Had to reformat the .txt file, eliminating the " qualifier to get it to import "all" records.
            B. I forgot the number, but had to reduce the number of records to really get all the records.

I would submit this as a bug, but would like to make sure it is not a known issue
            before doing such a thing.

              Re: Problem with import

Gregg, I kicked V11 out as I don't have a need to spend that much at the moment, however, I'd report it as a Bug.
Upward compatability from V10.5 to V11 should be a "given" really, while V4 to V11 wouldn't be.
If it isn't a bug, you may get a quick response - as in a bite from Selwyn - else you will probably get a workaround.
Given that you have had few replies, it might be an easily resolved buglet.

                  Re: Problem with import

had a problem with an import that worked forever, too, and i got this response. maybe it will help you.

"a major change to import in v11 is that CR-LFS that are inside text qualifiers are now treated as data - this change was added to support import of multi-line memo fields. An unfortunate side effect of this change is that mismatched text qualifiers can eat subsequent rows of data, instead of just the subsequent columns in one row that occurred in v10 (this has been the case on other instances where data wasn't importing)."

                    Re: Problem with import

Well that's a really clear statement you got, isn't it Gary?
So now you have to examine the text qualifiers in the s/sheet and change them?
How would one go about doing that then?

                      Re: Problem with import

                      WOW!!!!!!!

That information from Gary confirms part of what I thought.
So, I went through and removed the text qualifiers, in this case ".
Now the problem is there seems to be a limit as to how many records
                      can get imported.
A file that imports 30858 under V10.5, only imports 27704 records under V11.

                        Re: Problem with import

what i had to do to get my import to work, which is over half a million records, was change the text qualifier line in my code.
                        before
                        import.text_qualifier=""

                        after
                        import.text_qualifier = "\""

                          Re: Problem with import

Your after qualifier is what I started out with.
For me, that wipes out every other record.

Try replacing your text qualifier with ^.

Just tried it. Still has the problem of importing only half the records.
