Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Can you scan the file for embedded CR's, LF's, or CR-LF's. If you wish you may send me the file and I will be happy to examine it.

      Re: Problem with import

have you tried recreating your import with the genie? did you create the original with the genie? did you convert the genie to xbasic? post up a text file with some sample data.

        Re: Problem with import

Now that I have some "free time" again.
The original script was created by the genie, then modified to make it useful.
I can post the script, but I believe it uses a few UDFs.
The data is proprietary. I am willing to share it with someone for the purpose of resolving this issue,
but should not just make it available to the world in general.

I appreciate the help of everyone, but this not be necessary if Alpha Software would stand by the
following statement made on more than one occassion during the hype leading up to the release of
V11 "Any work you do in Version 10.5 will easily convert to Version 11. Nothing to Redo! So you will be ahead of the game rather than waiting for Version 11 to ship."

I never did get this issue resolved in V11, but AlphaAnywhere appears to do the imports correctly.

            Re: Problem with import

I went back to the import operation in v9 since that genie at least lets you place where to divide the fields. Why did they get rid of that function in v11? My text file comes from a report - with fixed width fields separated only by a space. Trying to get the data modified so v11 could import it was not worth the time nor trouble. In the new genie, if you specify 'space', every word gets separated with no option to remove the extra dividing lines created like in v9. Sometimes 'new and improved' is only relative at best!

Did you try dragging one line on top of another, or to the far right?
              There can be only one.

                Re: Problem with import

No, but I will try that. I know double clicking the line did nothing and there was no delete possible...

Dragging left or right didn't work. Importing the text file into Excel however gives a genie that works even better than v9. I can save as a dbf and append that into A5. I will just have to work with smaller files.
