Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Desktop: How to grey-out a button?

    Dear all,

    I need to open a form with certain buttons greyed out.
    I know how to do it in xDialog, but have found nothing in help, wiki and here to see how this could be done on a standard form.

    Just to clarify:
    I don't want to deactivate the buttons as they are still visible in full colours and I also don't want to hide the buttons.
    I do want to see the button but not in color but in gray.

    Only after some event, the buttons should turn colored again.

    Do I miss the obvious here??

    Thanks for each and every input!

    Capture the design settings for each button in the oninit for the form and set the button to gray. The shared variables will be available when you want to color the buttons.

    Code:
    dim shared b1acc as C
    dim shared b1col as C
    dim shared b1style as C
    b1acc = topparent:Button1.Fill.Accent_color
    b1col = topparent:Button1.Fill.Color
    b1style = topparent:Button1.Fill.Style
    topparent:Button1.Fill.Accent_color  = "Gray"
    topparent:Button1.Fill.Color = "Gray"
    topparent:Button1.Fill.Style = "Solid"
    There can be only one.

      You may also be able to dynamic properties introduced in v10

        You write a CDF and pass it "enable" or "disable" argument to switch the button's state.
        I wrote one years ago that also has an enabled and disabled text color argument so you can have quite a lot of flexibility but unfortunately there is still no silver bullet.

          Many thanks for your input!

          It only now occurrs to me (my native language is not English) that I probably omitted one vital fact:

          The buttons I want to grey out do have an image. What I want is to retain the image, but instead of having it in color to paint this image in grey (much like it's possible in xDialog and probably also in a web app).

          That's where I struggle.

          Thanks for your thoughts!

            What about a Conditional Object?
            You can stack the buttons and have colour or not, but you will have to use a photo editor or similar to create the monochrome effect.

            Qu'en est-il un objet de sursis?
            Vous pouvez empiler les boutons et ont la couleur ou pas, mais vous devrez utiliser un diteur de photos ou similaire pour crer l'effet monochrome.

            Wie wrs mit einem Conditional-Objekt?
            Sie knnen Stapel die Tasten und verfgen ber Farb-oder nicht, aber Sie mssen, um ein Foto-Editor oder hnlich wie die monochrome Wirkung zu erstellen.

            PS. Your English is near perfect! I thought you were a rich banker residing in Switzerland.

              Hi Ted,

              Thanks for your input!

              Your solution is what it sums up to: Having to use a conditional object and stacking two images on top of each other. This seems rather odd to me since Alpha does have this functionality in their xDialog 'environment'... Will place this request on the wish list (or shall I call it a bug )

              Hey, not all Swiss people are rich or bankers But it's these gnomes of Zurich (what a bunch of greedy morons ) who brought this rather unfavorable image upon us!...

              Thanks for translating your message into German and French, even though the French is completely lost on me (despite me growing up not more than 7 miles from the French speaking part of Switzerland...)

              Have a nice Weekend!

                My most extravagant lunch was when I travelled to Geneva from London just to buy a Chase Manhattan guy a wild boar meal.
                True. Ended up with a huge contract so it was worth it!
