Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Is it possible to check for 64 bit operating system?

    I have a script that calls an external program and need to be able to direct it to look for an exe file in either "C:\Program Files" or "C:\Program Files (x86)" depending on whether the machine is running 32 or 64 bit operating system.

    I can temporarily get around this is I do an if api_get_machinename() = "XXX" to get it to work but would like to be able to cover all bases in the event the user ever installs a new operating system.

    Thanks

    Do you have a 64 bit machine to test?

    ? a5_resource_info("svchost.exe").CSCreationClassName
    = "Win32_ComputerSystem"

    here. (32 bit system)
    There can be only one.

      You mean a new operating system that we don't know what it will do yet? When you figure that out - sell it...

      I did this on my I5 win 7 64 bit OS.

      ? a5_resource_info().CommandLine
      = "C:\Program Files (x86)\a5V10\alpha5.exe"

        on my I5 Win7 64bit OS also. Which is obvioisly not the case.

        Try this

        ? a5_os_info()

          Re: Is it possible to check for 64 bit operating system?

          In the days before Alpha provided all the functions to give us system information I used the SET function (from the command line) to get the system information into a variable then parsed the variable to extract the information I needed. Maybe, in spite of the plethora of system functions now in A5, this is still useful.

          In your case you could be checking specifically for the "ProgramFiles" value, rather than checking to see if the system is 32 or 64 bit. The SET function, regardless of OS (all that I've checked since XP, anyway) reports various ProgramFiles values so this should continue to work in Windows 8 and beyond. Maybe ...

          Run the attached script to get an idea of how the SET function can be parsed. You need to run it on a target OS to know exactly how the return values should be interpreted. The code creates a folder named for the machine in the application folder. It creates/saves/runs a cmd file there that writes a text file (sysinfo.txt) containing the results of the SET command which it then parses to write the message box. You can import the script into your app.

            Attached is a zip file that uses the proper technique to detect a 64 Bit OS. If it tests out good, I'll release the code.

            To use it, unzip the AEX file and place in folder C:\Program Files\a5V11\addins_installed (or the appropriate version if different). Start A5 up, then, from the code interactive window, try typing

            ?IsOS64Bit()

            which should return .T. or .F. as appropriate

            Let me know if it works or not, and on what A5 version and Operating System you are using. If you don't know what you are running on, download and install my free utility CSDA DiagInfo which will return the needed data

            It seems to not work on A5V10 and 64 bit from Al Buchholz. I'll upload a new version after revision

              Mark, there is no guarantee that the file you are seeking is in either of the Prog folders.
              Is it not possible to see if what you need exists in either?

                Ted,

                That's what I ended up doing to solve my issue.

                I check to see if the external .exe program exists in the Program Files (x86) directory and if not, then look in the Program Files directory.

                I should be good until a new operating system comes out.

                Thanks

                  And if the .exe has been placed outside of the Prog Folders?
                  I put V11 for example in D:\Alpha\V11 as I have a SSD boot drive that I don't want filled up with apps.
