Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to write events on specific Keys

In a Point of sale application, i want to do away with users getting the mouse everytime, i want the users to do all the operations using the keyboard, it is very annoying for data entry operators to grab the mouse from time to time to add or save a record, of course we can do this in alpha with key combinations, how do i make the F1 key to execute let's say a payment without clicking a button or pressing control +p? in the same app (POS) , what is the recommended way to do the data entry for multi users e.g. on a grocery store. an orderid is generated in the header, and child records are entered on a browse, will the data entry be entered on a form and saved automatically, will this one create a duplicated sale no.? or will cashiers enter records on header and detail and save the sale after payment is done and primary keys is generated manually? for the second choice, how will i do that in alpha five, xdialog maybe? i want to migrate the app that i made in vb6 on an access database but i'm stucked in different areas in alpha five.

Jet, the message board is a more useful knowledge base if folks try to limit their posts to one question at a time. As has been explained many times before when multiple questions appear in a single post, the questions spawn multiple sub-threads, all of which must be read by later readers.

Concerning your first question in this post, the onKey event in the Alpha Five form can be used to trigger scripts. Scripts can be written that will begin, save, or cancel edits. The combination is quite powerful and flexible.

And you can set shortcut buttons in menus and toolbars, as well as hotkeys (button text that have an & in it will have the next character as a keyboard shortcut (with an alt or ctrl button - not sure which offhand) which operate much faster.

Search ONKEY or ON_KEY in the message board to find onkey event typical code.

Re: How to write events on specific Keys

I put a text object on the bottom of some forms to show which 'Hot Keys' are available in the form's OnKey event.

          Ex:

          Hot Keys: {F1} Help {F9} Save {F10} Lookup {F11} Calendar {F12} Calculator

That with accelerator keys on your buttons, should help the user keep to the keyboard.

Have alook at the attached. It is something I am developing. It will open to POS interface. You should be able to pull it apart and see how the onkey works on a form. I am designing this work by touchscreen, barcode scanner and keyboard. There is also a code called calculator that I did first

                Hi Clunes,
Thats exactly what i'm trying to do, as with my previous application that i made in VB6,i can change the items once it is entered on the list, i can also change the price, and give discounts and if the customer wants a credit i can save in his/her name then at the end of the day the cashier counts the money on the drawer and prints a z reading and terminal reading comparing the cash sold on computer and drawer, but most of the things i cannot do it yet in alpha five. Also one feature is if one customer forgets his/her money the cashier can suspend the sale and the list will be cleared for another customer, when the customer comes back the cashier will just press a button and the previous items on the list appears and the customer will now pay and the transaction ends,Refunds transaction and many more? I'm Still struggling to convert my app to alpha five.
