Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Chart based on multiple columns

I am trying to place a chart on a form. I have watched the videos and i can reproduce the examples.
I am not using the xBasic approach... attempting to do it the simple way.

    BUT

I fill in the Graph Data form as best I can figure:
    Chart Type: Bar Verticle Grouped
    Source: Table
    Table or Set: receivables
Arguments: none... dont need to filter
    Series Type: Multiple Column
Plot... : Plot Series along axis
    Summation: Total
Data Columns: i entered the field names of the fields that i want to total... i also tried entering total(fieldname, GRP->Grand)

When I click ok... i get a message: 'Each' expression needs to be defined for summation

I would have thought the GRP->grand would have taken care of this...

how can i get this to work?

Chart based on multiple columns or records

    .
    Hi David,
I am trying to build a chart based on Multiple Records (not Multiple Columns, as in your case). My table is quite simple and I have tried all possible combinations: getting data either from a Report or from a Table, selecting from all the various options ... All to no avail. I have also searched in this forum and the general feeling is that everybody is quite lost/confused on how to build charts. I have seen the few videos on charts but none mention Multiple Columns or Multiple Records. I have also read the scant information on charts in the Alpha Wikipedia. So maybe:

    - I am missing some publicly available information in the Wikipedia, videos or tutorials
    - There is going to be an update in the Alpha Five Developer charting capabilities and so "they" are not bothering to post new info that would soon be old
    - The charting features do not work properly

    Regards,
    Felix

Re: Chart based on multiple columns

      Hi Rida

I think that the charts are 'working'... maybe not at intuitive as we would like but they seem to be working. I have been able to create the charts that i want but in some cases i have to create a temporary table, post values and then base the chart on the temporary table.

In your case I think that the key is to get the category and series specifications correct... i have attached 2 picture files that illustrate what i am talking about: SimpleValueChart.pngSingleSeriesTotals.png

Would you please point me to how you get to the chart setup screen in your example.
        Thanks

Where to find the Embedded Chart

          .
          Ray,
To get to the chart settings:

          - Create a report
          - On the right side of the report (Design mode) you'll find the Toolbox
          - Scroll down till the end: the last icon is the Embedded Chart
          - Click on the Embedded Chart icon and drag it to the report's working area (in either the Detail, Grand or any area) and "make a rectangle"
          - A screen will pop-up to show you the chart's settings/properties

          Regards,
          Felix

Chart based on "Multiple Records" instead of "Single"

            .
            David,
Thank you for the images. They are instructive. My difficulty is in making an Embedded Chart with the Series Type property set to Multiple Record instead of Single (I guess Multiple Column is somewhat analogous to Multiple Record). If you have any examples or tips, I would appreciate learning from them.

I'm sure there is a way to do it without resorting to an intermediate/temporary table. I think that the heart of the matter is that I am not getting the Series Expression right. In fact, I do not even know how to write/code a "series expression" (whatever that means!).

            Regards,
            Felix

              thanks Felix
              I'm using V10.5 - that must be a V11 addition.

                Ray,
You're right. I think it was a Feature Pack in v10.5. Now, just like all Feature Packs in v10.5, it is included as standard in v11.

Re: Chart based on multiple columns

I have attached 2 picture files: 1) a chart that is based on 'Multiple Records' as the 'Series Type' specification; 2) the dialog box for this chart....
In this case the key is to realize that the 'Multiple Records' spec forces the records that are grouped to plot as separate series.

                  ...Series_MultipleRecord.pngSeries_MultipleRecordDialog.png

                  ...hope this helps.
