Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

how can i report the locations and sizes of fields in a form

    hello:

i have a few very similar forms that all are slightly different from each other in appearance. this is due to small differences in the size and location of the fields on the form. to correct this, i have opened the nicest looking one and writing down the left, top, width and height of all of the fields so i can edit the other forms and make them identical. is there some way to generate a report on these details? even better yet, if there was a way of editing these locations/sizes in a table of some description it would save a lot of time.

    thank you in advance

    best regards,

    ed

Re: how can i report the locations and sizes of fields in a form

Ed, I believe the location and size of the fields can be extracted. However, the amount of programming to compare all the fields on two forms would probably be rather significant and I don't have enough years available to create a routine to get them then compare them to another form and edit the form. (I'm not sure if they can be automatically changed but I think they can.)

Besides, I can almost guarantee that other issues which neither of us can think of right now will arise in a routine like that. Also, can you guarantee that (A) all fields with the same field name have the same object name on the form and (b) all fields with the same name need to be in the same location on every form?

I'm not sure exactly what you are doing but it sounds like you might be creating more forms than necessary. It might even be one of those "I did it this way because it was easier initially" and now you're discovering that "easier initially" can mean "much harder to update later". (My daddy always told me that true selfishness involved long term thinking because short term selfishness often results in long term problems.) I've seen a number of people create multiple reports that all look the same except for things like titles, sub-titles, and areas that can be handled (shown or hidden) with conditional objects. A much simpler solution is to remember that the text of any label or title/subtitle can be passed to any layout (report or form) using a global variable and that conditional objects can have multiple layers that can be used to show only the desired layer for a specific situation. I like to think of all layouts as "a format" and then use fields or variables to complete anything that might change from one use to the next.

This method takes a little bit longer initially but not that much once you've done a couple. The big advantage is that when you edit ONE "version", you've edited ALL versions. It isn't necessary to go in and, as I did for one app, update 10 reports just to make them all look the same.

After writing all that, I remembered something that might work better for now. When I updated those reports, I opened two at a time in full screen, maximized mode with the Window Bar visible. Then I could switch from one to the other and immediately see any differences. If two objects were very close to the same position, I selected the "wrong" one and moved it with the arrow keys while holding down the Shift key so it moved one pixel at a time. That will probably be faster than checking the position and dimensions of each object.

Similar to what Cal stated last is how I do it as well....except I usually use the Advanced Copy and Paste from one object to the other between the two open layouts so that there is no guessing.

        This is painful to read!
        You could have, either:
1-Copied the "nicest" form to the others, or
2-Opened it and saved it as the others, or
3-Copied all objects and pasted them to the others.
And that's using my retro v8. Maybe in later versions there are even better ways to do this than a pencil and a paper.
