Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Sql Server Datasource on the Desktop App

I established a lookup in the field rules to display a list in another table and it takes about a minimum of 5 to 10 seconds to display 12 a list of 12 records. I used the alpha sports as my basis for field names and i created it on sql server and tried to input 12 records as the lookup source. Is the speed in accessing an sql server database really like this on the desktop? If not then How will i make it faster?

Assuming your existing lookup is via an active link table, I'm not sure. However 10 - 15 seconds seems slow even for active link. Are you filtering the lookup to a subset of records or trying to bring up the whole table? That would explain the slow performance.

The one guaranteed way you can make it faster by creating your lookup as an xdialog and use native SQL syntax to populate a listbox. If you haven't tried to do an xdialog, explore the xdialog genie and the "Learning Xdialog" application. It takes time, yes, but it wouldn't take long for you to see the possibilities. You could start with all dbf's and gradually switch to the server back-end as you become more skilled with xdialogs.

You don't have to learn the xdialog syntax by heart to work with xdialogs. I start every xdialog I do with the xdialog genie. Any time I need to add a new control to an existing xdialog, other than a checkbox, I open a new window and let the genie create the control for me and then copy/paste to where I want it. The real learning part is how to modify the code created by the genie to get it to do what you want. And that can be a slog. However, the results are worth it.

This is what I thought at first, displaying many records on a lookup entry would cause the delay, that's why i deleted the records and left only 12 records to be the lookup values, but it is still slow.

Yap thanks, i switched to Alpha five for the reason that it is easy to learn, I started cSharp by Microsoft before but when I saw Alpha Five and tried it(DESKTOP) i was able to learn at least the basic and could do some data entry for the least possible time , but learning xdialog is I think for me harder than learning the point and click of Csharp to do a one to many data entry accessing SQL Server., I switched to Web App from Desktop in Alpha hoping I could access sql server faster,But anyway I'll try to stick with alpha.
