Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help file options

    hello,

i'm wondering if there is a help file or a document that i can use that is not web based. i am trying to get familiar with this application and would prefer not to have to be connected to the net and having to type in a search term, every time i want to look something up. any help would be greatly appreciated.

    thank you

    Re: Help file options

There is a desktop help file with previous versions. It would not be uptodate with all V11 functions etc, but I still use it a lot as it is more user friendly. If you do not have a previous version, maybe a simple request to Alpha may get it for you.

Check out the Alpha manuals from Liberty Manuals http://www.libertymanuals.com/

I like the book approach as opposed to the online help. You can't type in a search and find anything, but I guess i am still a little old fashioned and like to have the book open on the desk while i am working. The X-Basic book really helped me a lot. I do not think a version 11 book is out yet, but most of the basic stuff is the same.

          hi jr,

i had looked at that web site a while back. no offense to them, but i thought the prices were a little on the high side. i would rather have no color on the book pages and a lower price.

          thanks

            Re: Help file options

Tracy, you can get a copy easily enough to look at off line for V10. It's got a lot of stuff you will be using but no V11 documentation.
The file you want is AlphaFiveHelp and it's in root directory whet V10 was installed. It's a compiled HTML file and will run alone on your PC.
Now all you have to do is get someone with V10 to send it/get it to you. My ISP won't accept over 10 meg I believe as I've failed before, and this file is 10.4.
Anyone with a site who can upload for you to download would be fine. Worse case, get them to zip a CD and send it by post. I'm in the UK so it's probably not me.

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.
You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.

I am looking for a version 11 equivalent but have been unable to find one. I like to use the CHM version (as Alpha Software now appears to no longer issue) because it's just too slow to search and find topics in an on-line version. And there are occasions when I may be working off-line when the on-line version is just not available.
In my opinion a CHM version is a mandatory requirement for anyone who writes a lot of Alpha Five Xbasic.

                    Any suggestions?

There is no V11 desktop. It was abandoned in preference to the WIKI. V10 is the latest. You can download that form my site at http://www.onestopsolutions.biz/alpha5/

prior to version 11, there was a pdf version of the help file. i understand that it is a lot of work to keep having to create it, as the help file is updated.

i'm hoping that one day, a printable version will be available.
