I am trying to fill a calculated field with a variable, AND NEED HELP.
I have a table (child record, but not a set) which contains the parent record ID. I get this ID by table lookup from the CUSTOMER record. I am using a form; not a browse.
In order to confirm to the desktop user that they selected the proper customer record, I want to DISPLAY not only the customer ID, but the customer NAME (perhaps as a label), as well.
I want to get the customer name from the customer record, place it in a variable, then create a calculated field equal to the value in the variable.
I have tried to use Action Scripting a) Dim a variable, b) fill a variable with data from an external table (or any means that works); then, c) place the variable containing customer name on the form. Seems simple, but it doesn't work. I would also consider any other method that would work.
I am attempting this action script as an event when doing the table lookup on the customer ID.
Perhaps I haven't given enough detail for anyone to comprehend what I am trying to do... if not, please ask for more. I would also like to see an example of just pure xbasic which would accomplish the same thing.
I realize there are other ways to create a child record, particularly using sets. I just want to know how to use AS or xbasic to do what I am trying to do.
To repeat: All I want to do is: When getting a field from an external table (table lookup) to place in a text field on the record, I want to grab another field which will DISPLAY ONLY, and does not have a place (field) in the record. If anyone grasps what I need, I sure would appreciate your suggestions.
