Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Problem running A5V8 App in A5V11

I have an application that has been running for years with A5V8. I tried running this app with A5V11 and I have encountered a number of problems.

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced problems when upgrading the database engine and if so, what specific area was the source of the problem.

In my case, I'm having troubles with the wrong records being deleted in a browse, browses not updating correctly, all records in the browse disappearing, Forms not updating, xbasic code to enter records stopped working and issues with memo fields not updating correctly on a form. There are so many issues and from what I can see so far, there is no common thread between these issues.

Actually, the is a common thread. All of these issues are happening to the same form. The form is build on a set. The form has fields, multiple browses, tabs and a memo field on the tab. All of my issues are from running xbasic scripts which manipulate the tables and the form. This form is the heart of the application.

Looking for a little of course guidance if someone has been here.

    Thanks,

Ron, I believe that someone had a similar problem and the solution was to go

    V8-> V9, V9->V10.5, then on to V11

Most systems are backwards compatible by 1 version but probably not 3.

I have v9 and 10, but not 11 so I can test the form in 9 if you don't have it.

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.
You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.

      Ron,

Ted mentioned that someone had a similar problem. I have had such problem when moving from V9 to V10.
I recall that after rebuilding the browses, the problem was gone.

And yes, the form was the heart of the application too.

Ron, it sounds like you may want to completely rebuild that one form.
Also, you need to open and save and close every layout - this will give V11 a chance to save it as a "V11" form.
With rare exceptions (from 4.5 to 5 was not bad, and from 10.5 to 11 was not bad) I've had to spend many many hours moving from one build to another - and, for the record, from V8 to V10.5 (especially after the new browse changes) was the worst ever. And I presume the same will be true for V8 to V11.

One client, a therapy clinic that has 200 roaming techs among 30 hospitals, "fired" me after getting an 11,000 bill for converting from 8 to 10.5 (Although they hired me back later.) We had to update for server 2008 and windows 7.

          Ron,

I'm having a few issues going from V9 to V11. Most of mine deal with the embedded browses. Make sure you have the newest patch installed, It made a few of my problems go away.

Thank you to all that responded. It appears that the embedded browse may be the root of my problems. I would really hate to redo the form as it's far too complex a design. That said, the users like it.

I'll try by removing and replacing the browses first. Maybe I'll get lucky.
