Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Conditional table lookup - with no lookup

I have a situation where I want to do a table lookup in one condition and no lookup at all in other conditions. However, the Conditional Table Lookup seems to require a lookup for all cases.

Am I missing something simple or will I have to write some code to do this? It's not a big deal if I have to write some code; I just don't want to re-invent the wheel because I missed something simple. (Coding the lookup is easy. The slightly harder part will be adding a dialog to enter new records in the lookup table if necessary.)

Cal, if you are referring to a field/object on a form, couldn't you put the table lookup version in a different conditional object?

If what you intend was that simple you probably wouldn't have asked, so I'm interested either way

Re: Conditional table lookup - with no lookup

Been trying to understand the question and obviously failed CAL.
Built a conditional lookup based on a date. First and second fields in the table.
First Field if date = today, lookup plays
Second Field if date <> today, can put anything in it.
Second Field if date = today, lookup plays.

Can you post a screenshot of the Lookup setting?

Re: Conditional table lookup - with no lookup

This is a Conditional Table Lookup in the table field rules. (It's not using a LookupC() type of function.)

I solved half the problem - sort of, kind of, maybe. I didn't pay attention to the fact that Allow Exceptions was set to "popup on mismatch". If that is set to "allow any value" then it's possible to have a "no lookup at all" option. Unfortunately, that allows users to enter zipcodes that don't exist. (Note: The attached screenshot is just to show what basic type of lookup I'm trying to use. The settings are just one of the choices I've tested.)

If necessary, I can probably get by with the above but I'd really prefer a lookup that automatically popped up the list on mismatch but ignored any lookup if the International field was set to True. It's looking like I may have to write my own code for that. I'm just hoping that my logic got stuck in one track and somebody will push me into another one that provides an easier solution.

          Hi Cal,

My only suggestions is to put the field lookup on the city field (usually resulting in multiple zips), to fill state and zip. Then in the OnDepart event of the Zip field do a lookupc() on the zipcode.dbf and autofill the City and State field. Arrange so the user can enter the zipcode first.

            It were me Cal,

I find it easy-er to do on the form with a record list edit combo box (on the zip in this case).
User can either type or lookup, either way on change, if there's an existing zip, fill in the City and State or not
I'm also a bit (read "very") conservative with using fieldrules.

Use: "Popup conditionally on entrance", or

"Lookup previous" might be a better fit here.

There's another issue I forgot to mention. Some postal codes, in places like Mexico I believe, are the same as ours. Consequently, it's really important to NOT run any lookup if the "International" field is true.

At this point, I'm going to assume there's no easy way to do this. I'll let the customer decide how important the "popup on mismatch" is. If it's important, I'll script it. It really shouldn't be that terribly difficult.

Since this was originally posted, has anyone come across with a solution?

I have the same need. I have multiple zipcode databases. So if the country is x, the lookup is from zipcode database x. If the country is Y, then the lookup is from zipcode database y. But if the country is z, there is no zipcode database and I do not want a lookup.

Right now I get an error message saying something that the lookup has not been defined.

                      Hello Ted,

In the process of putting together this example, I came across a solution. However; the solution wasn't what I was looking for, but I do believe it may be a good alternative.

You can look at the test form to see how it works.

Ron, there were no lookups defined in your example.
Try the attached - it's the easiest way I believe and based on setting the values and filtering as you go.
You can add as many different Countries as you wish this way.
A more fancy way would be using Dynamic Trees, but have a butchers hook at the attachment.

                          Sorry Ted,

The lookups were defined in the form. Put the form into design mode.
Right click on the field and down at the bottom you will see edit rule for .....

I'll take a look at your file. I'm short on time right now.

                              Ted,

No, not technical. Alpha just allows for setting rules at the form level instead of at the table level. Very handy.

Anyways, I appreciate your efforts, but that's not what I was looking for.

In the mean time, my work around was to create a zipcode table with just one record. Now when the country is one that has no zipcode table available, the lookup opens the zipcode table with just one record. The lookup can be ignored or the user can enter a zipcode if they wish. If and when a zipcode table is needed for that country, I'll just redefine the lookup.

But for now, no error messages are being generated.

                              Thanks,
