Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to copy an existing record as a basis for a new record

How do we copy an existing record except the primary key as a basis for a new record?I need to get all the data except for the primary key because the primary key is based in a simple default expression.

Not at computer right now with alpha. I seem to remember previous() or something like that.

The <TBL>.RECORD_TO_VARS() method populates the Vars pointer variable with the values of the current record's fields. (hint: don't use the primary key sub variable)
      There can be only one.

Thanks Dave and Stan, I found something on learn alpha.com http://www.learn alpha.com/duplicate/duplicate.htm, this thread is now closed, for newbies like me, you may visit http://www.learn alpha.com for more info.

          Stan to follow on...
Then you can use the pointer like dot variables to individually (by hand coding each field) write values back to the new duplicate record
I've just been trying (unsuccessfully i might add) to use a *for_each( ) function to auto-reassign.
Do you know of a way?
I've in the past used copy record/s to, change the key value in the temp table, and then a blob back to the new copy record - it works but cumbersome with many child records, but less programming than longhand individual fields.

Jet - I cant remember why it wouldnt work for my case, but Dr Peter Waynes tips offer great learning value

Re: How to copy an existing record as a basis for a new record

Ray, Seems what I am trying to accomplish is the same as yours, I want to copy/duplicate an existing record in an entire set so that users will just change some fields for the new record, just like the example in xbasic for everyone, wherein we duplicate the Invoice because customers might order the same items over and over again.I have tested it in only in two tables and it works, I hope it will follow with many tables because in the app that I'm trying to create, there are many tables on a set that I want to duplicate. My problem is how to assign custom autoincrement, I might ask in another thread but I will just mention it here, the Custom increment that I am trying to implement is to be based on a variable plus an autoincrement of numbers. example is, a variable might contain 3 letters, ABC + an autoincrement of numbers say 0000100, everytime I add a new record based on the copy/duplicate operation that i created based on Dr. Wayne's tip, the primary key should contain ABC0000101, ABC0000102, ABC0000103 and so on.

              Hmmm....

I do this to some degree with a lookup. I look up in a dropdown on last name(the id field is already set and saved - in the same record on a set) and copy all the data I want to vars. It then gets placed into fields on the form. It took some doing, making the vars and coding the data into the new record, but it works flawlessly.
This particular set has about 9 tables in it(I think).
