Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Creation Date, Last modified Date

I need some help on figuring out the followings...
    1) Creation Date
    2) Last Modified Date

How can I active this? I do know the theory but don't have much clue how to implement this. My ideas...
    1) Creation Date:
This will basically hold the day I created the info. Which is actually be the current date (Db will just store the value of current date)
    2) Last Modified Day.
DB will just store the value of the day it was last saved.

    ANY IDEA?

    Thanks.

Re: Creation Date, Last modified Date

There are a number of methods to accomplish this.

In our situation, we have extra fields in the table: euser, edate, cuser, cdate.
euser = who entered the record
edate = date record was entered
cuser = last user to change the record
edate = last date of change

caveat: Our systems keeps the user-id in a global variable so that we always know who you are.

in the on_save event of the record, we test for the type of action this is, enter or change, then populate the appropriate fields, e____ or c____, with variable of user and the current date before saving.

      Mine too.

The function for current date is date(). I just don't know how basic or advanced you are.

Re: Creation Date, Last modified Date

And, as has been stated many times in many threads for many versions of A5, DO NOT use a calculated field for the change date. If you do, then there are a number or operations that will update that date even when you really don't want it to be. For example, you add a new logical field and want it set to .F. as the default so you run an update to set all existing records to False - and, guess what, the "changed date" is now 'today' for every record.

Instead, put this into your CanSave Record event: (change the field name to match the one in your table)
        tc = table.current()
        tc.change_dtf = date()

This is much less prone to problems because the CanSave Record event does not fire when a record is updated via code (xbasic or operations). The one down-side to this is that if you do update the record using xbasic and you do want the change_dtf field to be updated, you must do it in your code.

WARNING: Sometimes you can get away with one line like this "table.current().change_dtf = date()" but I don't recommend on it. I've had only partial luck with it in the past while the 2-liner has worked 100%.
