Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Inventory / serial number tracker application

Before I start building this application for my business I decided to post to this forum to get pointed in a direction.

I have a multi-faceted business in which I need the ability to track serial numbers of inventory items from the point of purchase from either the manufacturer or vendor, through storage and on to the consumer. There may be instances where I may generate my own serial number and need the ability to assign the serial numbers of sub-assemblies to a " master" serial number.

Right now the application would be single user on a desktop. Later on it would be multi-user.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Bob

    Hi Bob,

Welcome to the Alpha forum. I hope you have lots of questions and enjoy working with Alpha as much as I have.

First thing, have a good look at the sample Alphasports which ships with Alpha. This will start you down the path of understanding how the application works with Products.

    Happy developing!!

Alpha is a perfect program for this task. It is very flexible. You can do many task. You can easily generate your own serial number or add one without many problems. You can use it conjuction with barcode scanning as well. Recommend you learn to do searches across the desktop forums V11, V10 and V9. You will find many answer that already discuss this type of topic. The code archive may also have examples that can help you.

After having followed all that good advice - and get a fundamental flow of items through your hands, and depending on where Serial Numbers first come into play;-
        1. in designing the structure for all transaction tables that have reference to a product that may have a serial number, include a field for S/N.
        2. in every operation that moves product through a process (ie purchase into stock, move to production, sell to customer)
        - record the serial number in the usual accompanying transaction.

By doing that you can easily later create a query that will show the movement history of any serial number with date and details.

If not scanning:- You also need, for each movement, to select from available number items which specific one is being moved so alternatively or additionally, create a serial number table with fields for each part of process and use that to choose available serial numbers for the movement to the next stage.

Bob, this sounds like a fun Bill of Materials project.
          Couple of questions/suggestions.

Is the recording of the serial number mandatory - as in firearms components/tuning kits, medical equipment or items covered by a specific warranty? If so then the process will probably need to be thoroughly mapped and written up in case you end up in court having to defend your application.

Will you be implementing component control at the "effectivity date" level? You know, when a parent component uses sub component 1001A up to a certain date and then 1001B from that date? Just mention this as it will have an impact on stock if you use dates, but less so (and more complex) if you use inventory quantities.
