Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    memo field problems

    An application that has been running ok for a number of years... started with A5V5 is now A5V11... has problems with a memo field.

    I first noticed that many of the records had blank values in the memo field. Almost every record has a short note in the memo field, so this was alarming.
    I tried reindex, compact... nothing worked.

    I always do at least one backup every 2 or three days so i was able to unzip a backup to a new folder, add the table with the correct memo fields to the application & post the memo fields to the table that had the missing values... everything seemed to work... BUT... on closer inspection I noticed that the posted fields were not for the correct records!!! RATS !!!

    The Post operation keyed on OrderNumber which is unique... the fields should have been posted to the correct record...

    The only other abnormal observation was that there were a lot of fields with $$ in the database folder. There are usually 5 or 6 per month but this time there were over 250!!!

    I NEED HELP !!!

    Re: memo field problems

    I don't think you can copy a memo file (fpt) from one folder-older version, using windows exploerer, and paste into another. A memo field will always be a field tied to a table, and I'm pretty sure that you must copy the dbf, fpt, and cdx in order for it to work. I don't really know why, but it has to do with them being in synch.

      Re: memo field problems

      Hi Martin
      Thanks for responding...

      I didnt copy / paste... i unzipped the entire (backup) database to a new folder... then I added the table from the unzipped backup to the database where the memo fields were missing. Then i created a post operation to post the fields from the unzipped Orders table to the Orders table where the fields were missing. It seemed to work... except for the 'minor detail' of incorrect indexing to the correct record!!??

      So... my problem is: how do I get my memo fields back???

      Thanks

        Re: memo field problems

        Not sure what you mean by 'posting'
        Is the memo field in a table by itself, or in a bigger table with a lot of user data?
        I always have memo's in a separate table.

        If the memo is in a table with a lot of other user data, I would suggest first emptying all memo data, most likely with a script reading record by record and doing a change setting the memo to ""

        then, I would open both tables, the "good" table and the "bad" table and set them both to using the key index
        read the table record by record in the good table, do a fetch find in the second table, and write the memo data from the one to the other with a change_begin/end

          <tbl>.memo_check()
          There can be only one.

            Re: memo field problems

            well... i think that this will have to remain a mystery...
            I tried the <tbl>.memo_check()... tried running from script & from interactive (as displayed in help)... just returned "" and no memo field values were recovered for any records.

            I gave up on the unzip a previous version of the application to a new folder... dropping the orders.dbf table... adding the table to the application with the corrupted orders->memo field... and posting (using a post operation) the memo field from the added table (restored from previous version), to the corrupted table: This resulted in a) partial fields being posted and b) partial and complete fields being posted to the wrong record.

            So... i ended up restoring the application (from a backup on a date where the memo field was not corrupted) to the production directory... which worked fine... except all the data that had been entered between last Friday (when the memo field was not corrupt) and yesterday had to be reentered... well it will be over the next day or so... we will hire a temp to key in the lost data... RATS!!!

            Thanks Stan... Thanks Martin... even though it didnt work, i really appreciate your help!

                Thanks Stan... yes i have Dr Wayne's book and i have read his article on memo fields.

                Maybe you can help me understand the <tbl>.memo_check() code in the help

                dim result as C
                dim fn as P
                result = t.memo_check("v")
                If (result <> "") then
                t.memo_check("P", .t.)
                fn = t.filename_get()
                fn = stritran(fn, ".dbf", ".memo_errors")
                end if
                t = table.open("orderhistory")
                t.memo_check("V")
                t.close()

                result = t.memo_check("v") executes before t is defined

                both of the following lines result in a 'type-mismatch' error
                fn = t.filename_get()
                fn = stritran(fn, ".dbf", ".memo_errors")

                ? what is the function of the following line?
                t.memo_check("V")

                Thanks Stan... it's got me a bit confused.

                  Re: memo field problems

                  The example code is Not complete. It needs to be adapted to your app.

                  The help system explains the methods used in the example code.

                    As Tom says, the examples are not complete.

                    Try
                    Code:
                    t = table.open("yourtablename")
                    dim result as C
                    dim fn as P
                    result = t.memo_check("v")
                    If (result <> "") then
                    t.memo_check("P", .t.)
                    fn = t.filename_get()
                    fn = stritran(fn, ".dbf", ".memo_errors")
                    end if
                    There can be only one.

                      Thanks Stan...

                      I know that the code must be modified... but most code found in the help system is a bit more useable..
                      for example fn is dimmed as P... should be C... and in the example t is used before being defined.

                      I realize that I am being way too pickey... but it mat save some time for other users.

                      Thanks for your help
