Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to create a query

    I'm dependent on the Control Panel Operations to create working XBASIC for crosstabs, appends, etc.

    I do not know the proper syntax to create a query against a particular table. The Help documentation is vague and confusing. I tried to use Operations to create a query but it is inadequate compared to its other functions. For example it does not show me XBASIC like the others do, it doesn't let me specify whether I want to create an index or query list, and doesn't even let me name the query.

    Can anyone explain how we learn to define a query, assuming we weren't born with that knowledge?

    If it will help you to help me, here's the A5V1 query I need to convert:
    _DB_NAME1 = A_APP_CURRENT_PATH + "CUSTOMER.DBF"
    dbh=db_reset(_DB_NAME1)
    query.description="Selected Customers"
    query.order="ZIP"
    query.options=""
    query.filter=".NOT.DELETED().AND.(PSW=\"2\".OR.(.NOT.(PSW=\"0\").AND.(LASTPD>=VAR->VLDATE.OR.QLDATE>=VAR->VLDATE.OR.QCNT1>=VAR->VCNT1.OR.QVAL1>=VAR->VTOT1.OR.QCNT2>=VAR->VCNT2.OR.QVAL2>=VAR->VTOT2).AND." + VCONMAG + "))"
    query_create(dbh)
    Also, do I have to worry about using query.order and query.filter since the "Help" says they're "DEPRECATED" and not to use them and YET the Geniis continue to generate Xbasic that uses them.

    Whew! Thanks to any takers ... Sam

    For example it does not show me XBASIC like the others do, it doesn't let me specify whether I want to create an index or query list, and doesn't even let me name the query.
    For some reason you have to save the query operation, then right click on the query operation name on the operations tab of the control panel, then you can view the xbasic. Indexes are not created via operations, right click on the table name in the control panel, Define Indexes.

    Code:
    _DB_NAME1 = a5.get_path()+chr(92) + "CUSTOMER.DBF"
    tbl = table.open(_DB_NAME1)
    query.description="Selected Customers"
    query.order="ZIP"
    query.options=""
    query.filter=".NOT.DELETED().AND.(PSW=\"2\".OR.(.NOT.(PSW=\"0\").AND.(LASTPD>=VAR->VLDATE.OR.QLDATE>=VAR->VLDATE.OR.QCNT1>=VAR->VCNT1.OR.QVAL1>=VAR->VTOT1.OR.QCNT2>=VAR->VCNT2.OR.QVAL2>=VAR->VTOT2).AND." + VCONMAG + "))"
    tbl.query_create()
    or

    Code:
    _DB_NAME1 = a5.get_path()+chr(92) + "CUSTOMER.DBF"
    tbl = table.open(_DB_NAME1)
    tbl.query_create("T",".NOT.DELETED().AND.(PSW=\"2\".OR.(.NOT.(PSW=\"0\").AND.(LASTPD>=VAR->VLDATE.OR.QLDATE>=VAR->VLDATE.OR.QCNT1>=VAR->VCNT1.OR.QVAL1>=VAR->VTOT1.OR.QCNT2>=VAR->VCNT2.OR.QVAL2>=VAR->VTOT2).AND." + VCONMAG + "))","ZIP")
    Those should work if the variables are dimmed as global. If not the filter should be (really should be anyway)

    Code:
    ".NOT.DELETED().AND.(PSW=\"2\".OR.(.NOT.(PSW=\"0\").AND.(LASTPD>="+s_quote(VAR->VLDATE)+".OR.QLDATE>="+s_quote(VAR->VLDATE)+".OR.QCNT1>="+s_quote(VAR->VCNT1)+".OR.QVAL1>="+s_quote(VAR->VTOT1Z)+".OR.QCNT2>="+s_quote(VAR->VCNT2)+".OR.QVAL2>="+VAR->VTOT2+").AND." + VCONMAG + "))"
    There can be only one.

      Thanks very much Stan. I'll try it shortly. Also appreciate the tip about saving the query first.

        You know, Stan, you're pretty good with this stuff!
        The query worked right away thanks to your tips above. I like the first choice a little more. I still have a few things to do (like create a report that's run against the query) but you've got me on my way.

          Ok, we won't go into

          REPLACE_PARAMETERS()

          REPLACE_VARIABLES_IN_STRING()

          and some other fun stuff.

            By the way, Stan, you'll probably know this.

            I read somewhere recently that there's an Xbasic command to get information about how many records were selected by the query. My son would really find it useful if I could pop that up in a UI box.

            Do you know that command offhand?

              More than one way

              Code:
              _DB_NAME1 = a5.get_path()+chr(92) + "CUSTOMER.DBF"
              tbl = table.open(_DB_NAME1)

              ix = tbl.query_create()
              recs = ix.records_get()
              ui_msg_box("Found",alltrim(str(recs))+" returned by query.)
              Code:
              recs = A5_GET_RECORDS_IN_QUERY(a5.get_path()+chr(92) + "CUSTOMER.DBF",".NOT.DELETED().AND.(PSW=\"2\".OR.(.NOT.(PSW=\"0\").AND.(LASTPD>=VAR->VLDATE.OR.QLDATE>=VAR->VLDATE.OR.QCNT1>=VAR->VCNT1.OR.QVAL1>=VAR->VTOT1.OR.QCNT2>=VAR->VCNT2.OR.QVAL2>=VAR->VTOT2).AND." + VCONMAG + "))")

                Re: How to create a query

                Stan, query ran OK looks like, and I've got a Label Layout defined. Problem is I can't tell the layout that I want to use a specific saved query. The one I created is called "Selected Customers". When I click "Label", "Properties", "User filter order from query", this is the selection box I get:
                A5V11_QueryList.jpg
                I have no clue what Name1 and Name11 are.

                Here's what I get when I use your technique of right-clicking the table and viewing statistics.
                A5V11_QueryList2.jpg

                I'm suddenly confused about the difference between an Index and Query List. I think what I want is a Query List so that its name can be selected for the Layout. Apparently it wants a query rather than an index.

                I guess the bottom line is what I can do to get the name "Selected Customers" known to the layout.

                Finally, the Label Layout offers me an opportunity to enter the filter order and expression there, but I don't really prefer to since I've already done a query.

                ??? Sam

                  Re: How to create a query

                  Both your pictures indicate the named indexes you have on the table, not saved queries. Any saved queries on the table or parent table of a set which the label is based on should appear below the indexes.

                  There is a section in the documentation comparing indexes and queries.
