Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    What are some common reason why a query won't save?

    I've been struggling with this for a while and was hoping others had the same problem. Here's the query setup:
    _DB_NAME1 = a5.get_path()+chr(92) + "CUSTOMER.DBF"
    tbl = table.open(_DB_NAME1)
    query.description="Selected Customers"
    query.order="ZIP"
    query.options=""
    query.filter=".NOT.DELETED().AND.(PSW=\"2\".OR.(.NOT.(PSW=\"0\").AND.QLDATE>=VAR->VLDATE.OR.QCNT1>=VAR->VCNT1.OR.QVAL1>=VAR->VTOT1.OR.QCNT2>=VAR->VCNT2.OR.QVAL2>=VAR->VTOT2).AND." + VCONMAG + "))"
    tbl.query_create()

    After I run the query, apparently without errors, I open the report which needs the saved query and there are no queries stored. I got my hopes up when I saw in the documentation that to have a query created instead of an index you need a query.option of "N". So I changed the above to query.options="N" and it didn't help.

    I keep thinking I must be making some rookie mistake like not having anything in the "()" of tbl.query_create, or maybe I should use a lower case "n". My situation seems simple. A query on a table and a report on the same table which needs the query.

    Any thoughts on something I should pursue?

    Thanks .... Sam

    That's not the way to create a saved query.

    Use the operations tab of the control panel. New operation, Query records, choose the table, design the query, save it.

    There can be only one.

      That's a truly great tip, Stan. I saw the query there in the list of operations some little while ago but when I tried it it didn't have the feel of the other processes I use like append, update, summarize and others. There's no ability to convert to Xbasic. So I just walked away from it.

      I simply assumed that when a query was written with the correct options it would get saved.

      So, Stan, I completely rewrote my difficult query to avoid having to save multiple query commands inside a character variable. As soon as I completed that I found that my query started working everywhere, in the Code tab of Control Panel, in report filters, the interactive window and others. Once more you saved my bacon.

      I'm about finished converting my application now. I just wrote a menu today and it was rather intuitive to use the Action Scripting to create the button launches for forms, crosstabs, and my other scripts. Action Scripting is an amazingly useful and friendly tool.

      I guess I won't be burdening you Alphaholics with many more of my pesky threads.

      In retrospect I'm glad I made the decision to upgrade Alpha Five rather than working out ways to keep running the 16bit code on 64bit software ... things like VMWare and Virtual Box. I was looking at XP Box from Microsoft but they just abandoned that in Win8. This was the way to go and thanks to all of you for helping me pull it off.

      Later ... Sam
